Neem Oil and the slugs
Comments (8)I called the extension service as I couldn't seem to solve the problem of what was eating my hosta. Anything I put on my hosta got washed off when I water, which is most every day. The guy there suggested I use a systemic insecticide. I bought Bonide Systemic granules insect control. I also put out diatomaceous earth and a powdered bacillis thurengensis. If it was cut worms, the BT should kill it. If it was the pill/sow bugs, the DE should kill them, then the systemic should take up the fight. It takes a week to 10 days for the systemic to get into the plant. What worked, I'm not sure. However, one of the things worked or maybe a combination of all three. The BT and DE are both considered organic pest control methods. You just have to wear a mask when applying the DE, as you shouldn't get it in your lungs. Once it's down, it's not a problem. It has microscopic sharp edges and cuts the shells of hard shell insects and they dry out and die. It has to be re-applied occasionally. The systemic doesn't say anything about being effective against slugs. (I grow mostly in pots, so don't have much problem with them.) Also, my insect problem is in my front yard, so my dogs aren't going to get into the insecticide. DE and BT won't hurt them after it's on the ground. bkay...See MoreNeem Oil... what plants to avoid?
Comments (4)I just discovered a serious aphid farming operation on one of my large shrubs. The new growth is literally covered with aphids and the whole shrub is overrun with black ants. I'm not sure what kind of shrub it is except it gets lots of tiny, white flowers in early spring. I was so disgusted that I lopped off all the aphid covered growth I could find (probably not the right thing to do this time of year?) Do you think if I just get persistant with spraying away the remaining aphids, the ants will give up eventually? I think the ants have built huge nest at the base of the shrub although I can't find a specific entrance....See MoreNeem cake tea for spraying instead of Neem Oil
Comments (2)I hadn't heard of Neem meal until your post, so I looked it up. Apparently, Neem Seed Meal is what's left of the seed after the extraction of oil. Therefore, it shouldn't burn like the Neem oil does. Down to Earth says the meal "is an excellent way to strengthen root systems, improve plant immunity and balance nutrient levels in the soil". According to reviews, the downside is cost compared to other seed meals and an unpleasant Neem smell. But perhaps the benefits are great. I hope you report back on how it does for you. I'm especially interested if you think it helps with insect resistance. I might give it a try....See MoreNeem oil a winner - so far...
Comments (5)Sadly, Oklahoma is a short-lived cut rose - but it has a wonderfully musky fragrance and so dramatic in its presentation...:-) Thanks to all for nice comments and recommendations....See Morejerijen
