IMHO, Sally Holmes would fit your needs beautifully. It's gorgeous, blooms profusely, resists disease, handles shade and gets to be a big, big girl.

My favorite mound is Mary Washington. Quick repeat to the point of continuous blooming. Blooms down to the ground, and not because the stems bend, but because it stays full down to the ground. The only problem with this one is that it is hard to keep deadheaded. Too continuous.
I don't know about shade tolerance. One of mine is in morning sun and it blooms just as much as the one in full sun, but both get at least 6 hours.
Second favorite mounder is Jean Bach Sisley, third is Mme Lombard. They aren't quite as moundy as Mary Washington, though.

Rugosas, esp in your climate. Frau Dagmar, Magnifica... And the basic species rugosas, both red & white, sucker. Or you could move south and have a lot more choices...

A mound how high? My first thought was one of the vigorous hybrid musks that I've fallen in love with, but they're not really much more than 5 feet tall. They're young yet (Buff Beauty and Lavender Lassie)and I don't know what they do in your climate. The Mary Washington I saw in Dallas was a good-sized plant that should fit the bill and she's lovely. Sally Holmes, who could complain? And Darlow's Enigma, if it grows everywhere as it does here, should be perfect, fragrant and nearly always in bloom. You might also consider one of the large Hybrid Perpetuals that rebloom. They're really rich and fragrant to boot - how about Anna de Diesbach or Yolande d'Aragon?

My Mary Washington is in a good bit of shade and is clean as can be and truly is covered with blooms all of the time. Carrie is right, she is a beautiful mounding shrub. I wish all of my roses were as easy and bloomed as much as this one. Did I mention she has a nice fragrance?

The Hybrid Musk I grow is 7' tall and 8' wide. This will be its 5th season from an Heirloom band and it was pruned back this winter. It was transplanted 2 years ago. I have no idea how much bigger it may get, but it is quite vigorous and hardy. Very thick and bushy, few thorns, fragrance and lots of blooms.

Now that I think of it, I do have a Sally Holmes that (I hate to tell you) we whacked back and thought we removed and it's starting to grow again this year a little nutty. I think I should transplant that to the front yard, but I will need another one to fill the space. And, I'm not sure how SH mounds. I had made her climb, I'm not sure if her canes are too heavy to mound nicely. Any ideas?

Sally Holmes bloomed well in part shade for me and rebloom seemed more consistent than other HM's. Many rugosas would meet your privacy need but Fru Dagmar is very short compared to others; really pretty tho, my favorite. How 'bout a trio of Sally Holmes planted in a triangle to grow into one huge clump? Wish I had the space to try that! And a bonus-- with your shade you'll see more of the pretty apricot tones on her buds. Before you decide take a long hard look at Penelope-- very showy and reliable.

What about Madame Alfred Carriere? My MAC is in part shade, gets about 3 to 5 hours of sun a day depending on the time of year, and blooms very well. She is already on her second round, though unfortunately the deer have been feasting on her. MAC is big, round and fragrant with no disease to speak of in a no spray garden. The only item in your criteria that she does not fill is that of color; however, her blooms are breathtakingly beautiful with their pink tinged white petals and loose, blowzy form.

I have found that new Dawn will do anything you want it to do---I have some that climb---I have one out by the road that we keep cut back it has mounded quite nicely. Does well in sun or shade-----wicked thorns !!!
I've been enjoying my Clair Matin which had blooms all summer---not as big as ND but very pretty---
Carefree Delight is another monster that will take over your yard---
and also Carefree Beauty-----CB has blooms all summer----

Susan- I wish you would reconsider the no-once-bloomer restriction: the happiest, most floiferous rose in my garden is Mme Plantier, I have her growing in a variety of ways and in everything from full sun to shade, and she will bloom and thrive anywhere.

I would like to mention 2 roses that I do not grow but would like to, maybe someone has experience with these:

Why not some once bloomers and rebloomers around it? If you can get it, Francis E Lester is a fantastic mounding rose (gets quite large!), and the fragrance covers a large area. Look at the FEL picture in the link to get an idea. Also, you might consider some of the big moss roses like Mme Louis Levêque, Général Kléber, etc., as well as Albas. Nevada also would be a great choice as George suggests, or the pink sport of it whose name escapes me. Isn't Mary Washington a noisette? Would that be hardy up there? Mme Alfred Carrière is hardier than other Tea Noisettes, but I wonder if it's hardy enough for where you are, it does make an outstanding freestanding shrub that repeats.

Georg Arends was mentioned on the "First Rose" thread. Up to 7' tall, thornless, very large flowers, and "plant in partial shade for best color." Doesn't sound like it mounds, but look at all those other fine qualities!

My (grafted) Buff Beauty is about 5 years old and it is rather a 8' or 9' mound than less and it is 8' because it was pruned back and "self-pegged" if that is the right expression.
Of course, I don't know how much smaller it could/would be in Long Island.

The red rose you inquired about is....drum roll...Knockout! The one in that picture is about 7' tall now.

I'm not as experienced as anyone else on here, but for me (so far)-the insects seem to have a special appreciation for the hybrid musk roses (i.e.-lavender lassie, buff beauty). Westerland is, so far, holding up on that end better than Autumn Sunset but is not impervious. Sombreuil has fragrance, but not impervious. Darlow's Enigma so far impervious but no fragrance.

Impervious large (well, will be large at some point) to this point are:

Compassion (good fragrance)
Illusion (little fragrance)

I understand that Compassion, although noted at the Kordes website, is a Harkness rose; however, it appears Kordes roses (especially of late) have an edge in disease resistance; therefore next year Kordes climbers I intend to try are Moonlight, Aloha, Laguna and Morgengruss.
