My non-controlled observation of alfalfa & dianthus

Just thought I'd pass along this observation I made recently. Last month I spread alfalfa pellets around my roses right before a few days of rain. I have 5 desmond dianthus planted throughout my beds. Of the 3 planted near the roses, I surrounded 1 plant with less than half a handful of alfalfa pellets. Out of the 5 plants, 4 are just about ready to burst into bloom. The one in which I spread alfalfa is just sitting there with no buds. No extra growth either. The one that took off the most was shoved into a pot last year because I ran out of room in the beds. It was overwintered in the garage & pretty much neglected. In fact, the pot got knocked over at one point, and someone hastily shoved some spilled soil back into the pot taking little care with the plant.

This is their first full season in the garden, and I'm anxious to see them in their glory. I just thought it was interesting that the alfalfa pellets pretty much stunted the show for the one plant who got them.
