Zephirine Drouhin is not only eye-catching, but fragrant and, pretty much, thornless. It is a heady experience to walk pass this enchanting beauty.

I understand this so well! For me, there are so many beautiful roses out there that I need the second qualification of fragrance. I see no sense in planting scentless roses when I am limited to 15 bushes (my husband would interject something here about "limited")?! I've got some super-smellers, and those are always the ones I move to first: Neptune, French Perfume, Mr. Lincoln, Double Delight... Some new ones this year that are still babies but smell and look promising are Zephirine Drouhin and Sweet Afton. I've come to a similar conclusion this year (which is only my second growing roses and my first ordering any online): I really need to see and smell them in person. Unfortunately. I've got two disappointments out of eight roses I ordered (and a couple aren't far enough along to get a good sense of anything). Midas Touch really doesn't smell like much to me, and Fragrant Cloud is nowhere near the color I planned for. All of the pictures and descriptions I saw listed it as orange. I wanted an orange rose. I did not want this oddball corally-red-pink rose that clashes with everything except the white Afton. It smells okay, but... bah. I haven't figured out what to do with it, so it's still in a pot. The person that said it doesn't photograph well was spot-on! I've also found that some roses that aren't described as having the strongest scents turn out to be enough of a pleasing kind of scent to balance it out. Catalina and Mardi Gras are two examples of those to me. The sense of smell is a fickle thing. That or we just need scratch-and-sniff catalogs. :D

OH! You have a couple I've been wanting. Please see my trade page though it needs updating. I have a lot of rooted plants and would be happy to trade for some unrooted cuttings of Deuil de Dr. Reynaud and maybe some others if you find some on my list you'd want. I’m in the same area as Sultry, so fewer nematodes, and heavily amended soil. I add a lot of OM, as my only real defense of the nematode attacks. More OM means more predatory organisms to reduce the number of root knot nematodes. I don’t think the own-root roses can “fight off“ the nematodes. My understanding is that some varieties have more mass to their root systems, and can afford a little nematode nibble here and there. Others don’t have as many roots, so nematode attacks hit them harder. It also builds over years, so some will start off ok, but over time, without intervention, the nematode infestation will overcome the plant, and it dies. The benefit of Fort, is the root mass. It makes so many roots, that it can handle a bit of loss to the nematodes. My own-root Lady of Shalot is doing very well, as is my Abe. I also have an Abe on Fort, and don’t see much difference at this point, except that the Fort needs more water. Both of these are young plants, only 2-4 years old, so we‘ll just have to see how they do long term. I do recall a post some time ago about the breeding of Austins being a factor; some have better background to do well here than others. If he calls it a musk or tea, I’m more inclined to think it will do well here. Gallica or damask, not so much. It‘s all one big experiment, really! I’m amazed at what will actually grow in my little microclimate...I’ve not shared any of these lists with any of my plants, and have no intention of doing so. :-)

It looks like Hoang’s mislabeled rose could be Princess Alexandra of Kent. Heres a few pinks from my garden. The Faun Sweet Drif Abe Darby Light pink Sun Rosa Wedding Bells Spirit of Freedom looking a little crispy, but usually a show stopper.

James, that is beautiful! Do you have any pest problem on this one,I see some small catterpillars on them. Can you share your care instructions for this plant. thanks

Thank you for the kind comments everyone. No pest problem Kandhi, but do spray for black spot, rust and mildew. I hope the following answer to your question does not make me seem to lackadaisical a gardener, but all I have done so far this year is cut out dead canes and cut back those that get to low over the walkway. No fertilizer yet, but soon a half cup of each: 7-7-7 slow release, blood meal, bone meal and glacial rock dust. I have my own well so stick it to the local utility by watering a lot (more than one gallon per rose per week). Hope all this helps, Jim

Hello Rosarama, From the angle of my photograph, the sun sets at 2 O'clock or thereabouts. Hope you can find the bloom problem with your Zephirine Drouhin because this is truly a wonderful rose. Jim

I see what you mean. It probably faces the east and gets the early morning sun. The roses I have in that exposure bloom non-stop. However, the Zeffy gets the western evening sun but is in part shade which I was told, she would tolerate - but apparently not

My Zeffy gets a only late afternoon Sun ad she is quite happy. Unfortunately, mine is on rootstock and this year it sprang forth, so now I have Dr. Huey blooming along with Zeffy. It was a shock when it first bloomed, but they are actually quite pretty together. Now I can't decide whether to remove it or not.

you know, I am getting a bit sick of seeing everyone's gorgeous ZD!! :)

I have had one for ten years, west exposure on fence, so, if she would GROW, she would see the other side of the fence is full sun!! 5 foot fence, so no drama getting over it! But NO! scrawny plant, own root from ARE, ten years old, and five blooms MAYBE a season, and STRICTLY ONCE A SEASON! no fudging here!

canes yellow and die, I guess sun is too short, although noon on is full sun. DUBLIN BAY doesn't seem to mind right next door...AND, isn't she a partial shade gal??? ok, noon to evening ought to work.

Anyway, I hate to sp her, my neighbor (an aphid's fly away) has a beauty that is on the east side of her home with a fence 15 feet away, so an even narrower pocket of sun, we bought them the same day, and va-voom, hers is like yours.

I know east is better than west, I guess I ought to move her but there are few areas where vivid pink works for me.

Please excuse the ranting, but geez, y'all sure are pretty! Ok, I am moving her tomorrow!! ANd NOT the trash bin.
