Canary Bird, I love this one (pictures)

This rose is still young. Less then 3 year old, but it is definitely one of my top 3 favorite roses.

I love its fragrance, abandance of blooms, bullet proof health, great vase life (if you cut a branch) and the fact that it blooms its head off from mid April here, almost the whole month before main flush.

Olga,

Your pictures are beautiful. Canary Bird is being added to my wish list. I got hugonis last year because of the pictures you posted. It shows no sign of blooming this year, but I check everyday to see if buds are forming.

That is a beautiful rose bush - covered with those delicate blossoms! I really like the soft yellow color and the foilage is so healthy.

I'll have to put it on my wish list :-)

I believe "some", Tazetta Division daffodils do better in warmer climates than others, and don't require a chilling period. It is even hard for me to say for sure if your Canary Birds will bloom in your average 30 degree celsius (86 degree F) temperatures. No daffodil will bloom twice in one year. If you want to be assured of your daffs blooming a second year, I would suggest you digging them after the foliage has pretty well faded and yellowed, store them someplace cool and dry, and then replant them in your fall season. You might try leaving just a few of them to see if they will return and bloom the next year without being dug. Do you know your coldest average minimum temperature during your coldest months? Sue

Thanks for those photos, Olga. The lilacs and Canary Bird make for a very pretty combination! I am excited about Canary Bird this spring because I finally got a big enough piece from my sister that actually made it through its first winter for me. It has buds swelling all up and down the canes and I sure hope it will push out blooms and not just leaves.

Thank you, Olga; that is very generous of you. The canary bird from Hortico looks more like what I'm looking for than the Rosa Xanthina Spontanea from other sources (more like Hugonis?) as it is a brighter yellow, compared to a more cream-yellow from other sources. Might the last Saturday in April work? I will be going to Sherando Roses to pick up a number of roses (before Randall retires in June); would you like for me to pick up a rose from there for you at that time? I don't believe his website presently works, but there is cached information available for selection. Or perhaps a certain purple gallica-centifolia cross I will be picking up at that time (if you'd care for a cutting of it)? I don't think he presently lists it as presently available....

What other kind of rose does the fragrance put you in mind of? How long does it usually bloom for? How big does it get for you? Does it sucker? HMF says it sets hips - are they anything to write home about? How disease tolerant is it?

If I have to replace my York rose (a real possibility), I may be inclined towards one of the early yellows, but I will want a big rose that has more than one season of interest. I specifically chose York rose because I knew it set prominent hips and that the canes had a pleasing arch to them even when they weren't in bloom.

This rose looks good all year around, but hips are nothing special in my opinion. It is very healthy, no disease at all. Leaves turn nice color in fall and the canes look very beautiful in winter. Fragrance is strong, similar to hugonis but stronger. Nice warm honey smell,but I am not good at describing fragrancies. My bush is still young, but I saw mature bushes that were huge, 10x10 at least. It blooms foe 3-4 weeks for me. I grow it where it gets only approx 4 hours of sun, just don't have better place for this beauty.

Thanks Olga! NYrita, HelpMeFind says the flowers are about 2" wide.

Olga (or anyone else), do you know if this rose is given to suckering much?

10' X 10' is a little big for me (but not by much!) That suggests to me it might well be an appropriate substitute for York rose (which looks to be dead, although I have not yet excavated to the graft to see what's going on down there).

My inclination is probably going to be to add a "blue" (as pure blue as I can possibly get) Clematis to bloom during the summer. Do you suppose Canary Bird's canes are capable of supporting a Clematis (say, one that gets 8' - 10' long - & NOT Jackman which is too vigorous)?

So, so pretty. I will just pretend that my Carefree Sunshine are Canary Bird.

P.S. I got lots of compliments on my Carefree Sunshine at my last garden tour. Several people asked their names and wrote them down. No one asked about Knockout. I guess they all had them. :)

Perennials, i.e., foxgloves, clematis, hollyhock, etc., and larkspur were the big hit of the tour. Roses were doing great but a few crisp blooms from the freeze, and lots of people loved Lillian Austin and Clair Matin (I guess they are unusual for hybrid tea growers and master gardeners).

Newyorkrita, I went out this morning and measured blooms. Majority of them are 2.5", some are bigger and some are smaller.
Yorkrose, I personally would never put clematis on this rose, but this is just a matter of what you want. IFor me signifact part of this rose charm is due to its open AIRY growth habbit. These dark chocolate, glossy, arching canes are so beautiful, you really don't want to hide them. This rose looks good all year round, but hips anre nothing special. It has nice fall leaves color and the canes are beautiful in winter. Never gets any kind of disease. I don't know if it suckers, my plant is grafted.

Oh my, that is lovely! I wish I had room for it.

BTW, I looked it up and Vintage Gardens makes no reference to suckering for this rose. That's the sort of thing they're good about mentioning, so I would assume that it doesn't.

Wonderful pictures! I love the yellows. I am getting Cantabrigiensis in fall, but I may now have to get Canary Bird as well. Do you think that Canary Bird would grow well into a tree? I have one in my front yard that is one its way out of this world. It has very few branches and leaves, so I was thinking of growing a rose up into it rather than replacing it.

HMF lists it as a cross between R. xanthina & R. hugonis.
