Crazy Daisy With No Petals

Does anyone else have this problem with Crazy Daisy? It does sound crazy, but I have more blooms on CD that only have a center and not petals than I do ones with petals! I've had this problem for the 5 years I've had this plant and every year I swear I'm going to dig it up and compost it. Then, I think, well, I'll try it just one more time.

No, nothing is eating the petals. They just never form. I know that other gardeners have had problems with some of the newer colored echinaceas producing petaless flowers, but I don't think I've seen a post about my problem with Crazy Daisy.

Anyone else?

I guess you've never heard of Aster Yellows virus. I'd bet money that this is the problem with your plants. Control is very easy...pull up all of the plants and dispose of them. Do not plant them again.

I've heard of it, all right, but not seen it. I did some on-line research after your post, and I'm not sold on CD having that. Every site I read mentions a few other symptoms, such as yellowing leaves with green veins, reddish colored leaves, twisted petals - the normal blooming flowers DO have twisted petals, but they are supposed to in this variety, tiny twisted leaf-like clusters coming out of the flowers,stunted growth, among other things. My plant has none of these, just healthy looking centers with no petals on some of the flower heads.

I'm sixty this year and have seen a lot of weird things through my years of gardening. One year, I bought some echinacea seeds on ebay that were opened pollinated varieties of the some of the early-newer varieties being introduced. Art's Pride was one, and there were others that I never see mentioned or sold anymore. A friend who has a green house started them for me and gave back the seedlings, which I potted up. When they bloomed, there were some really odd looking flowers. I had some with centers and no petals, some with tightly quilled petals that never opened up - I know, they sell one like this now!, and some with teeny tiny petals around a large center. I figured that the genetics of these echies were causing the different looking flowers. The brother of another gardening friend took them and has been growing them now. I've not talked to him in a while, and I wonder if he is still growing them. Anyway, this is the first time I've seen a healthy looking Shasta Daisy put out normal flowers and flowers with normal looking centers with no petals. I guess I was wondering if there could be a genetic issue here too. If it is indeed Aster Yellows, I'd like to be sure, and I'd then destroy the plant. I have no problem doing that.

That must be how the did it. They don't look like gerber daisy or any others that I've found...exactly like white daisies that are dyed vibrant colors. I was so excited because they match the shower curtain that I just put up in the bathroom! lol They were just beautiful! I was hoping to grow them looking like that. * Silver Princes Shasta Daisy (I grew these plants from seed three years ago) * Crazy Daisy Shasta Daisy (NEW! Growing from seed this year. The flowers look like Marguerites! Very frilly.) * Gloriosa Daisy (growing them from seed) - Love these big Sunset yellow and orange flowers. Reminds of a desert sunset on the mesa. I have some Clara Curtis seeds I got in a trade. Never have tried to grow them yet. Guess I'll give them a try. Thanks for reminding me, Glenda! They sure are pretty. I have English Daisy seeds to sow in April. I direct seed them into the garden every year. So pretty. Not sure that you would call these daisies, but I bought a one little pot of Coreopsis verticillata 'Moonbeam' & one of Coreopsis hybrida 'Sweet Dreams' Coreopsis last year. I planted the Moonbeam in the potager. There a dozens of tiny seedlings coming up around where the mother plant was. They are growing to the front of a bed of Double Pink Knock Out Rose and Double Yellow Knock Out Roses. Moonbeam's soft, buttery yellow color will look pretty in with those roses. Self-seeded Chamomile is coming up and California poppies that I planted on the 15th are up. Tall Mauve Bread seed are everywhere in that area of the garden. I never know where they will move to each year. Pink & white Tasha Tudor HH's transplanted behind against the fence and Black and Blue Salvias I moved back there last fall. I transplanted a Don Juan (cl) rose back there to grow on the fence. Larkspurs and Heleniums are coming up on the other end and white Baby's Breath. Bright Periwinkles and white and purple Sweet Allysum will probably coming back from seeds, and who knows what else. I love bold splashes of color throughout my garden. I don't know if the Sweet Dreams reseeds or not since it is a hybrid, but the plant kicked it - darn it. Sweet Dreams Coreopsis is pink with purple to red centers. Very unusual colors for a Coreopsis. ~Annie

The black and black with orange Blister Beetles have been eating the leaves off of everything this year. Usually, its just the tomatoes, but this year with our drought, they are eating all leaves, even the English Ivy on our house! I pick them off and squish them. Fly spray killed the ones on the front porch that were eating the ivy off the pillars. Dang it! I've never seen them eat ivy before. Am finding them on nearly every plant and every flower. My hens won't eat them. YUCK! If I had guineas, they would disappear fast. When I had them before, they ate the heck out those black Blister Beetles - wasps too. I sprayed my Roma tomatoes with Liquid Sevin and it killed the Blister Beetles. They almost totally defoliated the plants though before I resorted to the Poison War. It got rid of the over population of grasshoppers too. Now they are at a manageable number. Mostly just little ones hopping about in the grass and native shrubs and the hens take care of them, if they can catch them, that is. But did you know that grasshopper poop is the best fertilizer in the world? I saw a documentary on them last year.

My painted daisy is doing this. But when I purchased the plant, the blooms were beautiful. Nothing else in this garden has suffered.
