What are your other hobbies/addictions??

Well besides gardening my other "addiction" is Genealogy. I've been doing family research since 1996. Not only do I research my own, but I enjoy volunteering to help others in their research. Winter is coming up and I will be re-subscribing to my databases (Newspapers, census, ect.) to get back into the "look-up" requests. So, if you ever need some advise or help I will give my all to assisst you :D

My main hobby is gardening (my favorites are daylilies, irises, peonies, and lilacs, but I grow scads of other things too). But I also enjoy studying history (especially medieval history, and the history of gardening), painting (landscapes in acrylics, and Christmas ornaments), and playing Scrabble. This winter I'm going to take a continuing ed course at a local college, probably for pottery or painting.

I also have invested a lot of time in genealogy (drawn into it by my mother's research, which has snowballed into a full-scale book project for my family), but I wouldn't call it a hobby or an addiction - I just enjoy doing it to learn about my family and help my mother and sisters out with this project.

I really like to mosaic. I started a few years ago by collecting dishes and tiles of nice colours and then realizing I had no use for them and needed one. And then I found something personally satisfying about breaking a plate with 14 karat gold on it and gluing it to something... :) My brother saw me using a hammer on china one day and the next week he showed up with his ex-wife's dishes which she had given to him. Ah, the joy!!

Seriously, though, it's a great hobby which I may turn into a money maker someday.

It's tough this time of year when most of the stuff I like to do is not possible (unless you have much better circulation!) Like swimming at the beach or spring lakes, cookouts with the yard full of playing kids, camping by the beach, fishing. I admit, I get sucked into games on the computer when it's cold outside. I used to do a lot of cross-stitching but am having trouble seeing the fine details in that lately, and am still mourning the loss of all of the designs I made on the computer (and was starting to bring to life) that were lost when it crashed. I also like to design quilts but I don't make them. Sometimes my Mom will like one of my creations well enough to make the actual quilt. Last night, I spent about an hour devising a new Christmas ornament to make for family members. It will make use of a toilet paper roll, some red ribbon, cotton balls, and have a pic of our family. When my daughter is home this week, we'll get the picture taken. Next week hopefully I'll have a finished ornament to show. Before you know it, it will be time to bake dozens of cookies for gifts. Other stuff is not so exciting, like dust experiments (according to one of my magnets, "Dust testing in progress. Please do not disturb the samples.") and making a giant compost pile, and leaving a dirty dish under my pillow in hopes that the dishes fairy will clean the kitchen while I'm sleeping.

Hi Toni... Yep thats the plant I was talkin about. Even the same colored flowers. I did get a pup from the mother, not knowing if it would ever root... but I stuck it in a small pot and it has put up 2 new blades. I was curious as to what was going on in the pot so just yesterday I pulled it out to examine it. You aren't a kiddin it's a "pot buster" My Gosh, the roots on this little guy are huge already. I ammended the soil some before sticking it back in the pot. Funny you mentioned the seeds, last week when I was cleaning the ladies house I got the cutting from, I noticed a seed pod that had been on the plant for quite some time. A perfectly round, still fleshy green, I picked it off. Now it's in a small pot as well, hope to see if the seeds take. I didn't wait until they were dried so they probably won't do anything. But I'm gonna grab some more and wait for them to dry before I plant them. My EC is still hangin in there. I'm thinkin it may just be goin thru a little shock due to environment change. I think there are some disadvantages to buying from a greenhouse/nursery. Their conditions are so hard to duplicate. I realize every plant comes from one at some point, but I think the ones that they sell right from their store are more spoiled than the ones that come from the box stores. Just my opinion. VF-11... So far I have seen some huge improvements in most all of my plants. There is only one place to get it here, which is direct from the rep. She lives on the other side of the state so I had to pay shipping as well as the cost of the product. I shared it with my sister so it wasn't as bad as if I had to buy it all myself. When it comes to my plants tho, I don't fret $$$'s too much. If it helps them and makes them thrive, then it makes me feel good. My way of thinkin is "I'd rather have no plants than ugly ones" so I do whatever it takes to make them purddy. LOL. I did some reading on here the other day tho, and I'm a little confused... they mentioned that VF-11 isn't a fert, it's a conditioner. So, now I'm wonderin if I should alternate between fert and VF-11. Shees, this hobby was a lot easier before I knew so much. LOL. But it's fun to learn and try new things. Especially when you see nice results. You are quite the bargin hunter, Toni. I have a corn plant I got from a grocery store a few years ago. It was pathetic lookin, but it was only $2.00 so I took a chance and brought it home. It took me awhile to figure it out, but now it's twice the size it was and doing well. It's one that has a definite dormant period, I didn't know that at the time I bought it and it lost a few leaves due to over watering it when it wasn't growing. It's growing now, just coming out of dormancy, and it will continue to do so until fall, and it will give me 4-6 more leaves, which will make it about 2-3 ft taller by the time it's done for the season. My other plants slow down some in the winter but this one stops! Thanks again for all the nice pics, and advise, I always look forward to your posts/comments. PS I was right, hubby didn't notice the new shelf I bought... I waited for a few days just to see how long it would take... I had to show it to him! He didn't believe me when I told him I bought it two days before... when I painted my dining room wall dark red, I didn't tell him. I just said "do you notice anything different"? He looked all around the house knowing he'd better come up with something, he thought maybe I had rearranged the furniture or something, I had to point it out to him, then he said "what color did it used to be"? LOL

I love a real book. Though I am extremely clumsy and I sometimes tend to loose my spot, mainly cause I will fall asleep with the book in hand. Then it ends up on my face, then of course I ROLL. Oh me, sometimes I may spend at least 30 mins to an hour trying to find where I was reading and thinking wait I read that already. E-reader with the kindle app is WONDERFUL for people like me!! I so do not like the borders app. I haven't tried the barnes and noble yet for android but that will be my next app to install. 1000's of free books with the kindle app!!! They even have a kindle app for windows users.

Wow. Somebody asks about generalizations and gets a bloodied keyboard. The original poster made some general observations about her group. Wanted to know if this held up to what other people are are seeing. Somebody jumps up, takes the general observations as pigeon-holing, and takes it personally, even defending her/him self against something that was not mentioned until that point. Keep in mind that this is a forum that just about anybody can post on. If you think the subject is silly, accusatory or doesn't apply to you, then move on. To come back on and belabor the point is a bit much. Generalizations (and the "wondering" of the original poster might not even be that) are just that, general. It means not everybody adheres to all the generalizations equally. For somebody to stand and pointedly tell somebody else that they aren't like the "generalizations" is excessive. It is acting like somebody pointed a finger at you, like you are so affronted that somebody would call you ______ (fill in the blank). That feeling compels them to come back and explain in detail why they are different. Harsh, or egotistical, neither is pretty. If I were to come on here and make a generalization that all Agaves are succulents, somebody, somewhere in the world would come up with one growing in the swamp. Great, but maybe the generalization still holds. It also was said that the original poster's (o.p.) Cactus club was urban. Didn't read that from her. It also was implied that the o.p. said she was familiar with a Cactus club being a "lonely heart's club. Really? The the o.p.'s words were thrown back at her. First of all, Urban Northern Ohio were your words, Wantonamara. You have obviously never been there. To call it Urban Northern Ohio shows that you have decided that northern Ohio must all be urban. Mostly farms from Cleveland to Indiana. Go there sometimes, the farms are much more prosperous that anything you'll see west of Abilene. Generalizing here. It cuts lots of ways this generalization thing. I don't often post here, and I didn't for years because of the hard tone some people take. I was here when Spike Hernandez (his pseudonym) opened up shop in about 1996. I've seen that hard attitude drive very knowledgeable out, not that they were involved in the kerfuffle, but who wants to read somebody's attitude. I know I'll avoid opening some posts now (including this one ever again), and if 10 people do that it gets quiet around here. Drama is best left to live plays and old movies.

Yoga, boggle, sudoku, sewing, taking nice long walks, making crafts & yummies for/with my boys, swimming. And sometimes silly things like water gun fights, running in the sprinklers and dodge ball with the kids.

I have been a long time reader, when nothing is on TV I can read several books a week. But now I 'm hooked on too many new fall shows. I also scrapbook when I can get organized. And do all kinds of crafty things with my 5 yo daughter. Love to cook and try new recipes...hate to clean. That's me in a nut shell. ")

I, too, love scrapbooking! Other hobbies are cross stitch, making jewelry (I've recently gotten some of my jewelry into local boutiques!), cooking (especially baking), and (don't laugh)-- organizing! I'm weird, I guess...

But is there anything you are manic about...I mean REALLY addicted to? I see it like this: Some people dabble with genealogy and other's get totally manic about it. I can't have a conversation with someone new without asking something like "So, did you say your last name was (whatever)? Where did they come from? LOL!! Just like some folks plant flowers and see them now and again and other's can't let a day go by without stolling through the yard and getting their fingers in the dirt....you know what I mean :D

I understand what you mean. Mine is thread crochet. Victorian Xmas ornaments, holiday designs and doilies. Finally turned it into a business and now do lots of craft shows from Oct-Dec.
My ornaments are just about all original designs. From pattern books I have of different ornaments, I either redesign them, or take parts of several and turn them into something totally different. Each piece I make is individually hand crocheted, hand stiffened with a 1600watt hairdryer and then decorated.
It takes a lot of time and work but is something I just really love to do and enjoy selling to the public.

Of course, my gardens in the spring summer and fall are my pride and joy as well, and inbetween crocheting, stiffening, doing shows and designing, I'm WS, trading for seeds and working the gardens.

Mine is reading. I rarely watch tv, usually only the news and an occasional football game. But I love to read and go through several books per week. If I'm not gardening or surfing the web, my nose is in a book.

Mine is travelling. Now I pay a lot more attention to vegetation than ever before. It adds another dimension to the trip.

These are all wild plants I saw on a trip this summer; I am wishing for a camera that will take better close up pictures. The little white flowers in the first pic is 3 - 4" tall. It smells heavenly but you have to go on your hands and knees and stick your nose to the ground to get a whiff of it:

Beautiful photos. To afford to travel! Love it, and also love gardens/flowers. One of my favorites is the the Hula Lodge on Maui. Beautiful Gardens!

Crocheting anything I can find, rubber stamping my own greeting cards and cross stitch. Volunteering at the pregnancy center has to be my real passion in addition to gardening. Helping someone who feels life is about to end and watching them see the light is fascinating.

So ya wanna know what I'm manic about...well, truth is my manic obsessions come in waves, meaning that I will get totally obsessed with one thing for months....that will eventually trail off and I will get totally obsessed with the next thing. Right now I am on the tail end of my newfound seed obsession...and I can feel myself itching to get into something else...just don't know what it will be quite yet...and in between obsessions I read like there is no tomorrow. In the past there has been thread crochet, cross stitch, quilting, jewelry, faberge eggs, genealogy, Christmas crafts, interior design, floral arrangement, and a whole slew of other things....

By the way Vera...I have some dead ends in my family line and can't afford any of those subscriptions...maybe you could help?

I have a many other hobbies that keep me busy. I like reading, wood working (I own all the power tools at my house), sewing, soap making, and lately I'm into making jewelry among the other crafty projects. But the one that takes up a lot of my weekends is beer brewing. I'm very good at it but I don't actually like to drink beer.

I am married to a beer snob (BTW, beer snobs are worse than wine snobs) who considers it a travesty to call brands like Bud and Miller lite beer. There are a few micro brands he likes but enjoys our home-brewed beer much better.

I also enjoy making cordials, liqueurs, and mead. Again, it's kind of strange because I hardly drink but it doesn't stop me from making it.

Hiya Vera I am also very deeply into Genealogy. I've been doing genealogy since 1993. I love it and will research anyones family history. I've also helped two people who were searching for their birth mothers. In one instance the mother and daughter were reunited and in the second instance the birth mother was deceased but the daughter did get to find her Uncle. It sure is a WONDERFUL and fulfilling hobby. I love it. I also love reading and History and Civil War History. I used to dress up and portray a Civil War nurse for my Nursing students. It was such fun.

I had no life till I started trading seeds, then I grew flowers and butterflies visited my garden, so now I raise butterflies! I spend a lot of time tending to my granddaughter who's 3, and I have 2 dogs that have totally spoiled me:) I'm thinking of taking the Master Gardeners classes that start in Feb.

This will be my first time ws so I don't know if I'll get addicted to that or not, but if my obsessive compulsive disorder is in order (lol), I probably will!

sharon, you'll enjoy the master gardener classes. I took mine last year. I learned a lot and have met a lot of great people! I can't wait for the new classes to start in jan/feb so I can volunteer and relearn what I forgot from mine!

Don't ya just love hunting for them ancestors that dropped out of the sky LOL!! You definatley have to become a Nancy Drew. I've also been working on putting together a genealogical history of all the men in my Casper/Cosper (maternal) line that had father/sons in the Revolutionary war thru WWII :D

Am currently in the process of moving my family info from one website to another my new one and am laying out differently, ect. The first one was basically names and dates in a descendancy fashion and this time I'm trying to include the history and make them come 'alive' so to speak LOL
