But I will reiterate some standard reasons why that should not be done regularly nor for extensive time spans. Everything JAL said plus the fact that running the engine at low RPM while heavily loaded is "lugging" the engine. Lubrication of the engine internal parts is at its weakest when engine RPM is low. Another way to test the health/condition of a hydrostatic drive tranny is to stop the machine on an incline with the tractor oriented uphill or downhill. Kill the engine and see if the tractor begins to roll easily with the motion control in the center position (neutral). If the tractor rolls readily, there is probably a lot of wear in the pump and/or hydro motor. If the tractor just barely creeps, or does not move at all, you have a good, tight hydro system. The "self holding" feature is why hydrostats must have the bypass circuit (free wheeler) in order to be moved when the engine is not running. The creep test requires that the condition of the motion drive belt be good and not slipping on the tranny input pulley....See MoreDispute with JD Dealer -GT235 Bad Transaxle
Comments (40)justalurker, READ what i said. the dealer IS TRYING TO MAKE IT RIGHT. we have no clue if this tranny even exhibited any symptoms prior to failure. as an electronics tech i can tell you that there are many times when something is checked, determined to be in great shape, then fails miserably shortly thereafter with no hint it was goign to happen. in our, and other repair places', business there is a saying "if it ain't broke nwo we can't fix it." so IF the tranny was showing no evidence of impending failure, then the dealer was right to proclaim it in perfect shape. sure, it was stupid to say that because Murphy just rose up and bit him in the butt. at the very least he should do what he is doign and offer to fix it for HIS cost in materials. if we sold a used product and proclaimed it to be in perfect shape, we give the customer this same option or the option to return it for refund. now, IF the hydro were exhibiting symptoms, then the dealer should pay the full amount for the repair or take the unit back. sorry that i disagree with you to an extent, but i really think that based on WHAT WE KNOW the dealer is being fair about it. if the hydro failed on teh dealer during his check out, he wuold have just sold the unit as-is for parts to someone. he never would have fixed it to sell. since he sold it and then it immediately failed, he is doing his best to make it right while not driving himself out of business....See MoreMTD Tractor: just bought $50 , starts but battery drains
Comments (13)Hi Guys, Todays activity - tried to start it but it could only be started by priming the carb with gas. So, it needs the carb taken off and cleaned. I put some sea-foam in the tank but I think the carb could use a good cleaning . Next, I removed the battery box and then aha I could finally get a view of the 'hydrostatic' transmission. Then I got the compressed air out and blew off all the dirt on the top of the tranny. With a flashlight and a mechanics mirror, I looked it over pretty well and could see that -vent tube, where others say it can be drained + filled from -the brake lever, which was not springing back, and which caused the wheels to be locked while in neutral, will oil that and put on a new spring -finally the model number tag with bar code, but the darn thing is so tiny and at the front of the unit that I could not read it clearly, plus it was backwards on account of me using a mirror. Oh well enough progress for one day. Question: are there 2 types of oil in this unit ? I read somewhere that there is a hydraulic section and a gear drive section but that might have been on a different unit. This is just a gear driven transmission, right, not a hydraulic tranny as the name 'hydrostatic' sort of implies? Oh, sorry you need the model tag info, ok ok, I'm working on that. Thank you. Comments (18)I know this post is old, but Google felt it was relative to my question. I'm having a problem with the transaxle designed pictured in the drawing and photo shown above. The symptom was the Mower stopped forward motion, and belt was smoking. I replaced the symptom first (a new drive belt) and continued with my unsuccessful diagnosis. I removed the transaxle and watched a half dozen videos of what's going on inside these little buggers. What I found was the reverse gear was wobbleing excessively on the shaft and hitting the bolt and nut that goes through the differential or spider gear carrier and jamming up, stopping the Mower dead in its tracks. I scored a deal on both gears, the shaft and shifter finger on EBay. It arrived but was a right hand shift model. I own a left hand shift. So I could not use the new shaft for the forward and reverse gears, I had to clean up the old shaft best as possible,, it appears ok, but I understand it runs constantly at twice the speed. It maybe on borrowed time. (Trade a right for a left shift axle anyone?) With the transaxle still open and split in half, I drove myself nuts trying to figure out what kept the reverse gear all the way over to one side, as even the new reverse gear ran into the diff bolt. Your above drawing and hand written explication cleared this up for me, THANK YOU! the pinion gear lines all that up and keeps the reverse gear from traveling too far and running into the diff carrier bolt. I discovered all this sitting in the comfort of my Lazyboy while searching on my tablet. As of this moment it's all theory, the transaxle sits open on my workbench out in my cold garage tonight. I will tackle this problem tomorrow, and if it doesn't go well, I will check back here and I'll include pictures, they seem to be the key to some excellent responses. If you guys have picked up on something in my post that is a red flag in my repair that I've gotten wrong or I don't see, please I'm all ears gentleman. Thanks for your time....See Moremla2ofus
