can I try getting a jump on next year by doing them now? has anyone tried?

can you tell I am becoming obsessive about these??

Wait til the fall when the temperatures are in the mid 80s during the day. About 2.5 months before your first frost. They'll hold over the winter and bloom next spring.

Would you suggest this for all perennials?
Or, should i start some right now?
I wouls love to get a head start,and over winter them in pots,would this work?

Well for a more courteous answer, LOL. Here in zone 7 my little neighbor that has beautiful poppies each and every year says to direct sow them in February. So for you in zone 9 I would say if you are wanting the blooms in the spring you could probably direct sow yours in January or still even in February. Also how she recommends direct sowing them is by tossing them on the ground where ever you are wanting them then lightly press. Now I will also mention her area is amended so she isn't just tossing them on bare dirt. If you were to go by the guidelines stated above it would make no sense, each plant has various germination rates. Various time from germination to bloom. Not all plants are the same.

there's a whole forum devoted to wintersowing- i'd go there and read up to get your basics. then, there was a thread last winter where we talked about what we'd tried and what worked well in situ, as well as container sown. try searching in this forum for it. i sow larkspur, poppies, rudbeckia, nigella, bach buttons, sweet peas honesty (lunaria), columbines, milk thistle and bells of ireland in situ from fall til about feb. also, lettuce, spinach, carrots, radishes, peas and any of your winter veggies can be sown in situ. it's always worth sowing 2/3 of your seeds of any one type in situ, and the remaining 1/3 in a container the first time to see which method works better. you will get better germination in your containers, but you also have to separate and plant them out. if something does well directly in the ground i do it that way as it's a bit easier for me, esp for large amounts like lettuce. if you have a tiny amount of seed, do it in containers to control things. most things except super tropical stuff will do well sown in containers following the winter sowing method. i know there are lists on that forum. good luck!

Hi Scarleta, I will have lots of seeds when mine dry out. email me and I will get some to you. Maybe we can trade some too. What colors are yours? Make sure you till your bed good before you sow too. Hello. . . I did just what your friend said to do. . . I got a brown lunch bag full of seeds from my neighbor last fall. I didn't do anything with them, just left them in the bag in the garage all winter. Mostly because I wasn't sure where I wanted to plant them. last late spring, I'm thinking May, I roughed up the soil a little bit in a south facing, scorching bed and just shook the bag over the area. There were a lot of seeds and I'm pretty sure every one of them lil buggers germinated. I had pretty red poppies! ! ! They didn't last very long, but poppies don't. My sister took some of the same seeds and scattered them on the ground in the late fall and she had the same results as I did. Don't cover the seeds, just let them lay. they need sun to germinate, that's what my neighbor told me anyway.

Carol, I started rudbeckia, shastas, and a couple other perennials last fall. They're 4' tall and about to bloom today. Don't see why it wouldn't work. I used containers in full shade and potted them into small cups for the winter. You might need more winter protection in your area, so I would put them in the ground instead.

Here, we toss out poppy, larkspur, and other early spring bloomers in the fall. Some germinate and hold over the winter, others germinate in early spring.

I spring and summer sow several perennials and plant them out in late fall. It's a lot of fun. I don't like overwintering things in pots, but I have done it.

I was just looking up the germination temp on tom clothier (it's 65 degrees), because I didn't get any sprouts this year. I'm going to try spring sowing. Token, you're in the south, where winter is actually a growing season. I've had a lot of small seedlings die over the winter, unless I "zone-6 them" with the hoop house or coldframe. If I can sprout it now, those babies can really use the warmth and sunshine of the summer months. I'm now pretty leery of fall-sowing.
