rugosa hedge?

Anyone growing rugosas as a hedge? I grow many different rugosas but am considering the idea of making a hedge with them...

Does anyone has a picture to show me how that would look like? (I mean, in a real garden, not the picture on a catalogue).

Finally, and most importantly: is it true that such a hedge could be left unpruned? (i.e totaly carefree, like 'plant it and forget about it') ?

I would use the simple white and red rugosa (R.alba and R.rubra). Would that be a good choice?

I don't have a picture, but I have seen it done.
There is a long, loooong rugosa hedge at The Hermitage (the home of Pres/General Andrew Jackson and his wife, Rachel.).

That hedge was precisely trimmed, however.
I have an uneasy feeling that, au naturel, it might have a "messy" look.

I think that you'd want to plant a bit closer than normal spacing, but I agree that you need an Oregon viewpoint, not David Austin's. They totally miss on the size of their roses in California. You might be able to find someone from the Portland Rose Society or the rose gardens there who could advise, as well. I don't know Hyde Hall. I, too, have seen some amazing rugosa hedges. There is one at Empire Mine in nearby Grass Valley. I also saw one at Omaha Beach in Normandy, lining the path to a monument. My sense of smell is not great, but the fragrance was incredible. Anita

My experience may not be very helpful given that my zone equivalent is 9. However, I have one rugosa in my rose garden and it has the most wonderful perfume - it's a white variety called 'Gufo della Neve' (Snowy Owl is the translation, I think) - Anyhow, it is completely free of BS when almost all my other roses (with the exception of the David Austin 'Queen of Sweden') are all very badly affected and are in close proximity to the rugosa. Unfortunately, it is a magnet for those horrible flying bugs that live in the soil and come out during Spring - here they call them 'maggiolini' which should suggest that they're only active in May, however, last year they were active for months - right through the Summer. The bugs are black with little white spots - I think they may be rose chafers. When I was complaining about these bugs at my local nursery I was told not to worry because they only attacked light coloured roses - so maybe the solution is to get a rugosa with a dark flower? Yes, I do. One long bed (60-70' long) of alternated Purple Pavement and Snow Pavement Rugosa's. They are planted up part of a driveway and on a bank. They were picked as the Pavement series sucker aggressively and spread on their own roots so they fill in areas very quickly and create a dense impenetrable thicket. I will find the pics for you tonight from 2 years or so ago and post them up.This bed has never been pruned and maintained. The only pruning they ever get is with the riding mower when the suckers reach into the grass. The hedge is now about 6-7' tall after 3 years and impenetrable. Also have a long hedge of mixed Rugosas planted in a raised bed made of stacked railway ties(sp?). I'll see if I can find a pic of that too. You can make a hedge with the species Rugosas, but many of the hybrids are also more than capable, just as hardy and disease resistant and overall, better bloomers over a long season. Don't discount the hybrid Rugosas as they are usually better plants than the species, Rubra and Alba for garden/bloom performance.

I've had my rugosa for about 8 years and found that (like mad gallica says) rugosas don't care. You simply can't make a mistake with a rugosa! After the first flush, I simply cut off or pick off the dead roses at the end of the branch. I do this because I would rather the bush puts her energies into making new roses rather than making hips. Karl, I'm curious to see how your "experiment" works out because I've never left hips on the bush early in the season. Aeiger, I've found with my rugosa, the later flushes are never like the first. My rugosa goes through stages every season. I usually prune quite severely (sometimes a third of the bush) in the early spring because the bush tends to become leggy. Rugosas LOVE to be pruned. Then the first flush occurs, then lots of new growth, then the second lighter flush (that's when the JB's come), then more growth, and yet another lesser flush in August. So Aeiger, enjoy your rugosa...do anything you want! She's probably the most forgiving of all roses!

scarden. In Cornwall, I planted a hedge of rosa rugosa Roserie de'l'Hay. It was about fifteen metres long. It was one of the best things I ever did.
It grew quickly and evenly to about two metres plus. It protected the garden in that area from the cold north-easterly and easterly wind. It leafed up very early in spring, and was always the first rose to bloom every year. It's leaves turned a lovely butter yellow in autumn.
Best of all, it flowered all summer and into autumn, and wafted it's perfume across the entire garden.
I never, ever pruned it, or gave any attention at all except admiration.

no problem with the IMG code, I can nonetheless see the pictures, using a little trick, don't worry :-)
I would really be grateful if someone could post a picture of a grown hedge, or give me his/her opinion on a grown hedge, because from the pictures I see only young rugosas. I know they grow big, quickly.
I am still not very persuaded about the need to cut them in a formal rectangular shape: would this not make them look ugly?

scardan, The reason I never pruned or trimmed my rugosa hedge, is because it did not need it to look tidy or neat.
It looked natural, not clipped and formal, but never messy.
Bear in mind the entire hedge was only one variety.
Had it been a collection of different rugosas, that would be another matter.
