But just make sure to fertilize it - high nitrogen content in spring and fall. Comments (4)I cut all my plant back in the fall, so the dead plant stuff does not end up in the water over winter. This help keep the gases under the ice down and makes spring cleaning much easier. Cut them short so new growth has lots of room to grow....See Morecutting back columbine
Comments (4)Cut the stems down to about the top of the leaves near the bottom of the plant. You can cut them down even further if you don't want to see any stems but leave a few inches. Water well and they may bloom again for you. I cut mine back last month and I have blooms again. They will die back a bit in summer and then I often get another bloom in fall. HTH! Comments (1)I usually chop mine back around the end of February. The growth usually makes it through winter but they look so ragged. Didn't get any blooms last year, the hurricane winds and lack of rain really gave them a rough time. I do notice they are all sprouting new growth, including a couple I thought I'd lost.
