Why won't they bloom?

I don't understand it. I have two Jacobs Coat's and one Jacob's Robe, out of the three only one climber is blooming (Its the J. Coat and they are so gorgeous!). Meanwhile the other two, 1 Jacob's Robe and the other Jacob's Coat, both have small buds small that show no signs of opening. The one blooming climber has big plump buds and full lush foliage while the other two are thin by comparison.

Does the size of the bud make a difference? I treat all three climbers exactly the same.

Why won't the other two climbers bloom? The buds are not brown so its not Rose midge (at least I don't believe so). Is there anything i can do to help them along outside of yelling at them?

I think you mean Joseph's Coat and Jacob's Robe. First of all, how long have you had these roses? Second, where are each of them planted? Third, what's your weather been like? With more information we might be able to give you some ideas as to why they are preforming differently.

Yes I mean Joseph's Coat and Jacob's Robe sorry. I have 2 Joseph's Coat and one Jacob's Robe. Out of the two Joseph's only one is blooming and its maybe 1-1/2 to 2 feet away from the one that's not performing. The Jacob's Robe is 10 feet away on the same side of the flower bed as the other two. They were all planted 2 years ago only a few weeks apart from each other. I know the non-performing Joseph's coat was the first and then I purchased the second a few weeks after and much later the Jacob's Robe which was quite well established when it arrived, blooming even. The weather here in NY has been warm in the day with cool evenings, I live by the ocean so its a little cooler than other parts of Queens, maybe temps between 50's and 60's. The three were purchased from different nurseries if that means anything but they all have excellent reputations (Josephs coat from Brushwood, the blooming one and Jacobs Robe from Stargazer Perennial). At first I wanted to blame it on age since roses from Stargazer tend to be more well established and sent in one gallon pots compared to Brushwood but this cannot be the issue since the Jacob's Robe is also having the same issue. The buds are so small on these two compared to the other that I am now wondering if they aren't ill or something. My Winchester Cathedral has one rose blooming and I'm sure the other's will follow suit since they seem more ready than my two reticent climbers. Its so annoying since I have the two Joseph's trained into an arch and now only one half is blooming.

Dear Al, If you have two beaches, and you ho each beach, and then, liking what you did, you did it again, you could be described as one who rehoboth beaches, couldn't you? Ahhh yes, your Aloe. As you know, Aloe erinacea, native to Namibia, is a winter-grower. In my experience, winter-growing Aloes don't break any growth records, but that could be due to my lack of care. But enough of my faults.... This Aloe, in my experience, almost never offsets, is slow to flower, and it's even rare out here in AloeLand for it to flower. If you have a number of them you could intentionally damage the growing point to see if it will offset, but I'd wait to do that until September or so, when its growing season is beginning. It's a lovely plant you have there, Mr. Aloe Al. Given that you've had it for so long, I would have expected it to flower sooner that 25 years, but what do I know? It probably needs to be sent to San Diego (which, incidentally, is the only place I've seen it flower). Some people call this one Aloe melanacantha v. erinacea, but we're not some people, are we?

garlic chive and yarrow: why won't they bloom?

Bill - both of the plants you mentioned do not bloom until well established . Some garlic chives need a year or more before they feel settled in and happy . Yarrow is the same . Give it time -- lots of time . Both plants do well if neglected . They do not like too much of anything although easily tolerate recent rains . Both my yarrow and garlic chives are currently blooming but not as much as before the rains and heat came . Many trees and plants are just not happy or ready to bloom until well established . For some like my grapefruit tree - it took 10 years ! Kara - the white yarrow you have that is blooming is from me . Bill - keep the yarrow . You'll fall in love with it this winter when all else looks terrible and the yarrow has gorgeous feathery bright green leaves and is blooming away .

Since you mention several months time frame, it's possible that they were actually affected by the big cold front that came in early March in your area. 4 of them already look like the color of fading blooms. However, you can keep them on as long as the bloom stalk is still healthy looking and it could be that in your local area, they will still be coming up (though I have seen many people's daffodils already in bloom, but I can't say if yours are late since there are daffodils with different bloom times)

Cynthia, thank you for the photo! Gorgeous!!! Meg, don't water too sparingly ... LOL. The roots need moisture to grow. My theory is after the roots have been twirling around the pot for a bit the plant 'decides' that this is as far as they're going to get and begins the blooming process to replicate itself. That may be why a more mature plant will bloom after the flood and drying period as mentioned above. It 'thinks'; "Well, I may die soon so I better use all my energy to bloom and produce seeds." However, the varieties we grow are sterile hybrids and don't make seeds. The article below says not to use saucers under pots. Perhaps saucers might promote rot in 80 to 90 degree climates like some parts of California and Florida, but with our 105 to 110 + degrees in summer they need all the help they can get so I use saucers. The saucers retain a little water and gives the soil time to soak it up. The peat moss in many potting soils become resistant to absorbing water after drying. I even mix extra water retaining crystals in my potting soil. Miracle Gro contains it already, but not enough IMHO. Sometimes if the soil has really dried out I either set the pot in a tub of water to hydrate, or lay a very slow dripping hose in the pot. Plus there are differences in varieties. I notice some begin blooming later/earlier/longer than others, but all the hybrid varieties available in nurseries bloom well. Do keep us posted. I'll be interested in any answer(s) as well as I was THIS CLOSE to asking the almost exact same thing!

I am on the opposite coast but of my 21 roses, only 3 have bloomed and historically, most would have bloomed by now. Three of my older roses have buds and have had buds for 3-4 weeks, yet they seem like they will never bloom.

Other than thinking radioactivity from Japan has affected them (LOL), I can only assume the dry winter somehow has gotten the roses biological clocks out of whack, since nothing else has changed in my yard. (I've fed them 3 times since March, water regularly, we've even had more sun than normal for SF so far).

Can't figure it.

We had a very mild winter here in NY. There was only one day of snow flurries and frankly it felt more like one long autumn with a few cold spells. The buds on the two non-performers are small even though they've been around for a few weeks. I'm dumbfounded. Even the size of the buds have me confused. I wish I could upload pictures here so I could show other members but for some reason I cannot find a feature for that when posting. The buds and bloom on the other Rose are spectacular, so I don't understand.

Roses have really complex ancestry, and roses that start blooming in spring at much different times is fairly normal, especially when they are only 2 years in the ground. Some of my roses were in full flush two months ago, two of them just started blooming this week! A full two months different, even just a few feet apart.

If the canes and foliage are healthy, just be patient.

Why won't they bloom?
