New echinacea cultivar: PowWow white pic
Comments (2)I think the consensus has been over the past few years that PWWhite and PWWildberry are the exception to all the poor introductions we have seen. That is. hardy with lots of flowers, on lots of basal growth....See MoreHeight of Echinacea White Swan?
Comments (5)My White Swan is at best around 30 inches, I'd guess slightly shorter than that. My Becky Shastas are just about the height of 36 to 42 inches that you mentioned in your posting. Both were planted over a half dozen years ago. Both flowers are in the same bed, with the Becky further back and White Swan nearer the front, primarily because of the drier conditions at the back (up a slight rise and nearer the house wall, rather than for any height/planting reasons of mine. The shastas flow in and out and around the shrubs at the back and show up well against the green shrubs. The Shastas seem to prefer (and spread into) the slightly drier conditions at the back, although the bed is fairly dry overall(for my garden) built on exceptionally heavy compacted clay, since the bed is at the very top of my small hill. BTW the two plants do not flower at the same time, the WS Ech finishes just as the Becky Shastas start. The Shastas bloom at the same time as a large stand of Jacob Cline Monarda, which is a good 4 feet tall and wide. The shastas, although shorter, sort of surround the monardas and the effect is very pleasing....See MoreWhite Echinaceas - Virgin, Frangrat Angel, White Swan...?
Comments (7)Oh man, I just spend my lunch hour at the Indianapolis Museum of Art display gardens. They have a small trial area and in it two beds that hold large clumps of Echinacea 'Milkshake', 'Champagne Bubbles' and 'Avalanche'. Absolutely magnificent, all three of them. Avalanche is almost pure white and absolutely covered with flowers. It is a little shorter than I expected, about two feet tall, but perfect in that size. Champagne Bubbles looks similar to Avalanche, but somewhat bigger in all of its parts, including the flower. It's cone is really something. The flower petals droop just a bit more than Avalanche, but not in a bad looking way. CB had some more tattered looking flowers than Avalanche, some holes from Japanese Beetles, but nothing really badly disfiguring. Milkshake just converted me from being pretty indifferent to the new flower shapes that are offered with Pink Poodle and Coconut Lime (the ones that I have seen in person) to absolutely loving it. And whoever named that variety got it exactly right. It has that exact color of a milkshake. The whole plant has a presence, it's pretty amazing. I will add this plant to my garden. If I had to choose between the three, I would rank Milkshake and Avalanche a tied first, and Champagne Bubbles a very very close second. And one last thing, we just had a pretty good rain storm move through about 30 minutes before. All three clumps were perfectly upright (no staking required) and all three had a very pleasant fragrance so soon after the rain. Oh, and one final thing, bumble bees and honey bees loved the plants too. Sorry for rambling on, I just had to report this. I love spending lunch hours not eating...lol...See MoreColor of newly opened Echinacea 'PowWow Wild Berry'
Comments (13)How many buds have opened as of now? I have two plants. Both purchased from nurseries. I had my FFO on one earlier in the year and blown away by the deep, saturated color. It's gorgeous! The second plant came from a trade, but I know it was purchased by how it was packaged with it's tag. It just bloomed this past week and was much lighter than my other one. Because it has only opened one flower, I'm waiting to see what others will look like. The first plant I mentioned is a year old. It did not bloom last year and has cycled through an entire year. I don't know if that makes a difference in the color or not. The trade plant is young and much smaller than my established one. Linda...See Moreflower_frenzy
