Help, Rose bush leaves turned yellow overnight
Comments (1)I don't know MF, but my The Fairy often drops a lot of solid yellow leaves from the center of the plant at this time of year....See MoreBlack fungus on rose bush leaves, help!
Comments (8)Your problem right now is possibly due to lack of deep watering and a hungry soil. You're absolutely right to pick up the dead leaves because that does help to cut back on reinfection. For the soil, if you can add a good thick mulch of well-rotted garden compost (so you can't tell what went into it) and some ancient, no-smell-now steer or horse manure which is all crumbly, mixed in. About one bucket of manure to four buckets of compost. When autumn comes put about a two gallon swish of wood ashes around each plant. That's ash from untreated wood only. The ashes add potash and that helps strengthen the plants against disease and frost damage, too. You'll probably find that you'll get black spot again toward the end of the summer when all manner of fungi start showing. Just use one of the recipes already supplied. And, for next year - start with a well-fed soil. You can repeat the compost application in spring once growth has begun - but keep it back from the stems. The compost you put on now - and in the autumn - will be what the roses will be calling on for goodness to grow with. The spring application won't really become available until further on in the season. If your plants are getting too dry, you may also have a scale infestation along the stems. You can reduce this with winter oil or even soapy water and a dishwashing brush scrubbed over the infested stems. Prickly work - but worth it....See MoreOh no! Black spot on rose bushes
Comments (17)Steffie, I'm hoping for rain next week because we haven't had much this month and the trees need it. OF course, before that rain falls I have a lot of stuff to get into the ground, so I hope it doesn't get here too quickly! I have been meaning to plant a New Dawn rose ever since we moved here, and think I have finally found the place I want to put one. Might have to go rose shopping soon! And, I agree, the fragrance from the florist's roses can't hold a candle to the fragrance from the roses in our gardens. I use scent as part of the criteria when selecting a rose. If it doesn't smell good, I don't want it! It HAS been a depressing week, first with the Virginia Tech shootings, then the anniversary of the OKC bombing, and, of course, the anniversary also of the Waco/Branch Davidian tragedy and the anniversary today of Columbine. I think this is the hardest week of the year, because the news stories are always full of remembrance of these tragedies. I have mostly left my TV turned off and retreated to my lawn and garden this week where it is generally peaceful and serene. My family says I am in "my own little world" when I am out in the garden. They are correct, and I love it there! Dawn...See MoreHELP! Roses foliage turning yellow then canes to black
Comments (4)Roses also do not like to be in the middle of so much grass. I would weed out all of the grass (or anything else growing) within 20 inches of the base of the rose (ie a 40 inch in diameter circle). Why are there bricks so close? They do not like that either - I would move the bricks. I do think your roses just need water, and they will be OK. Don't feed or spray them right now. Oh, very important - they will die if their roots are sitting in water - does the area where they are planted drain well? If not, move them to someplace that does. The comment about forsythia above just means it will create too much shade if it gets too big, or grow over the roses - not that there is some sort of mysterious poison coming from the forsythia. Does not look like a problem right now. Where are you, geographically? Jackie...See MorenanadollZ7 SWIdaho
