Need new tree suggestion

My 2 year old Bradford Pear wasn't blooming this spring. It bloomed last year just fine. It didn't look bad, but when my husband leaned on it, it snapped off at the base. It looks to me like it just rotted because of too much moisture. Unfortunately, I can't do a lot about the moisture. The land slope and neighbor sprinklers are something I have to deal with.

So! Help me out. What fast growing tree can I plant there? It gets full sun and lilies around the base of the old tree flourished. The grass in the area grows fine, too. I don't want a willow. What would you suggest?

Just about any tree is better than bradford pears. Breaking like that is very typical for them. Gardening in the root zone of trees is a bad habit also and would encourage you to quit doing that.

How big an area do you have to work with?

Full sun and moist soil is pretty easy to live with... black gum, maples, bald cypress, willow oak, swamp chestnut oak, river birch, pawpaw, redbud, dogwood, possomhaw, redbay,sweetbay, fringe tree... There are MANY good options, but it would help to know how big you'd like the tree to be in 10 or 20 years, or if you even plan to be there that long.

We recently moved into a new house. In the middle of the front lawn there is a group of small trees. It appears, based on my limited knowledge that some of them are apple trees, and one is a cherry. I found a picture of this house from about 2 years ago, and it had a very small apple tree in the same spot bearing some decent looking apples. I'm thinking someone wanted this other tree (what I'm guessing is a cherry) instead of the apple, but didn't remove enough of the tree. thus the multiple trees in a single location. I was hoping I could get these trees Identified, if possible, and what to do about keeping the trees. I live in the Boise Area of Idaho. the wife and I both want cherry trees in the long run. Crepe myrtle or crape myrtle (alternate spelling) is not a good privacy screen. They leaf out fairly late and are not that densely foliated. They do look nice when in bloom though, particularly when used with several other identical crepes. The kwanzan cherry or kanzan cherry (alternate spelling) you have in your yard is very popular and pretty in bloom. They have a whole cherry blossom festival for these trees in D.C. However they are prone to a number of issues and not that long lived. I can't think of very many fast growing shade trees that have showy flowers although red maple, catalpa and tulip poplar come to mind. How much room is there to structures?

Do you have the tri-color beech? Its colorful early and mid-season, although by end of the season it is a bit duller looking. Probably depends on amount of sun. I have no idea how it would do in a pot. Instead of the typical Acer palmatums, you could try Acer shirawasum 'Autumn Moon' or 'Aureum'. Or the trifoliate types: griseum, mandshuricum (sp?), triflorum or striped bark maple... For a colorful shrub, Ilex mesearve 'Honey Maid' is nice. My new one came through Z5 wonderfulyl where other Ilex mesearve types didn't fare so well. HM seems most colorful in winter.

The Omega looks really good to me, but it doesn't look wide enough for the trunk of nobles.... The one we have now holds about two gallons (maybe a little less) of water, it does screw towards the trunk, but it has levers that you push and you can slide the screw back and forth ... right up to the trunk and screw to tighten... or push the lever and pull away from the trunk. Very easy, I put the 11 foot tree up by myself... although it was VERY heavy. lol they drink like the dickens, I fill it up everyday for the first 4 days... then a little under a gallon a day after that... and less and less ...... ( don't know what kind I have! Try a cherry kwanzan tree.They like moisture,are fast growing,look terrific in bloom and hold their shape without all the fuss of pruning.Expect 15-25 years of blooms before they start 'getting old'.

Heres mine today in Grand Rapids Michigan.Its only 3 years old,its budding and will look great again as soon as this Michigan weather decides it time for some 'global warming'.I'd be happy with some 'regional warming'right now.
