Red Mapel sparsely leafed last year

I am wondering if there is some sort of disease a red maple can get. Last year it was so sparcely leafed that the light would show through. In previous years it had a lush full canopy. Is it dying or diseased? It is starting to bud out, but wonder if it is going on its last year.

what else can you tell us about his tree..

how old.. how big.. any recent construction on site???

its hard to diagnose disease just by lack of leaves ...

most likely.. you need a local CERTIFIED arborist for an on-site inspection

Redwood, as you figured a loss in the amount of foliage a tree puts out is a sign of a health or climate issue.

I had a big White ash tree which lost a fair number of leaves early six years back most likely due to something like anthracnose. The next year the tree was back to 90% as full save for a few dead branches.

If the tree is your prime landscape specimen or really matters that much then go with the professional help. Sometimes I just put lots of pictures on here and try to figure it out by myself if its not critical. Critical like the maple isn't going to fall on your house.

My neighbor has had bad luck this year. One of his Kwanzan Cherries never leafed out. Also one of his weeping willows was sparsely leafed the second half of last year and was behind the other. I limped down today with him (ACL surgery) and found 1st a wound in the bark, mechanical or rot, who knows, but there was tons of loose mostly unattached bark around it 2/3rds of the way around his tree with the usual assortment of bugs eating the wood inside.

Is yours budding out as heavily or as early as other maples in your area?

From my understanding, some plants acquire these when the leafs stay too moist for too long in shady conditions like over crowding in big box garden centres where they cram larges trees in small over lapping spaces. If its not a huge issue with you, pluck the few affected leaves if there isn't many, and watch to see if its spreading. I would also wait and see if after fall when it loses its leaves if it returns next spring. Could just be a seasonal issue.

I'd just leave them be. If the sog is really dead cutting it off will have no effect on axillary buds lower down. Dead tissue is effectively cut off already. It's only by cutting back live tissue you can redirect the plants' energies. If they are going to resprout they will. And if not not. The only reason to cut off the dead bits would be to let air and light in and to remove any parts with fungal infections. But on 1200 plants I can't see the advantage.

I have a 'Red Dragon' that I have put in the highest of three terraces Â trying to get it not too far from eye level for someone standing on grade at the lowest level. However, it may be so shaded by its own leaves that the red won't show. I'll find out next year and report back. What's the right proportion for flower height v. clump size to you? I don't mind the variations I've seen except for a couple of mini's or dwarves which, by gummy, keep blooming under their leaves - the stalks are that short. These were two of my no-name hostas, and I think one of them bit the dust for good this summer. The other is lookin' rather poorly, but it's October, so that doesn't mean anything.
