of course the hard drive is jammed with old pix ...

most of mine are yellowing.. and ready for sleep ...

i spotted RED SOX while taking conifer pix ... often we wonder.. whats the point of another green one .... even if it has red petioles.. even though you cant see them.. unless you are so drunk you fall face first into the clump ....

but what caught my attention is the perfect balance of scape height to mound size .... its just a perfect little mound in all respects ....

and also .. i don't know if its the flower color.. or maybe its the scape color.. but there is something unusual there also ....

if i were pollinating my own crosses ... and i had a good streaked mom .. i would try a few crosses of this for those two reasons.. plus have the bonus of the red ...

too many breeders .... are just looking for leaf shape and coloration .. and forget about the proportion of flower height to clump size ... ken

I've often thought the same thing about red petioles too but never put it into words, "you can"t see them.. unless you are so drunk you fall face first into the clump" LOL, that is hilarious!!!

Very good point made. You are certainly on to something. It never occurred to me, but you are sooo right. It is very easy on the eyes and beautiful in it's own simplistic way.

Oh no...LOWES is open? darn and I just let DH take my truck lol. But I am almost done catching up here and then I go clean the garage. Steve, the guy who put our new windows in. FINALLY has time to install the new side garage door. It needs a new framework and he did such a good job on the patio door. That DH refused to have anyone else do that door. I am so excited. The beginning of the new year is looking good. If I forget for a moment that it took 2 hours to get online hahahaha What a timing also. Just when I am painting the house by that door. Perfect. This way I do not have to redo it later. Well Lowes will have to wait. But I do need to get soil for all the seeds I want to start. Have fun and watch out for that weather Kristy. Lucy

If you are planning perrenials in between, you more or less have to leave the room as the daylilies will crowd out the other flowers. This only works in all daylily sections in my opinion. I didn't crowd them like this in my mixed beds but instead spaced them far apart and put in annuals in between. But you could do them in clusters and later when they fill in too much you could move the middle one. This is just my idea and the close spacing goes against conventional wisdom. I have been gardening for a very long time and beaking the rules most of that time. You should see my rose gardens. Planted really, really close and some I have had that way for 4 years already. Needs more plunning but works for me. My yard is also not big and I refuse to waste space.

Interesting to see the reflectors around the grow lights. Maybe I'll try that. One slight problem, my grow lights are part of a decorative plant shelf in a highly visible area of our home. The young veggie plants that have replaced the expected flowering plants already draw enough attention....not necessarily good attention. Just imagine if I started tacking up other stuff nearby. Maybe mirrors on part of it would help some though. Might even make things look better than now. Yup, that's what I'll tell the family :) Or convince them I need to assemble a new unit in the basement....

I agree, Ken - a perfect mound. My June, bought just this year also had a very pleasing scape to mound size balance. I think it's one reason I like my Blue Cadets, too.

I have a 'Red Dragon' that I have put in the highest of three terraces Â trying to get it not too far from eye level for someone standing on grade at the lowest level.

However, it may be so shaded by its own leaves that the red won't show. I'll find out next year and report back.

What's the right proportion for flower height v. clump size to you? I don't mind the variations I've seen except for a couple of mini's or dwarves which, by gummy, keep blooming under their leaves - the stalks are that short. These were two of my no-name hostas, and I think one of them bit the dust for good this summer. The other is lookin' rather poorly, but it's October, so that doesn't mean anything.
