John Deere lx172 battery not charging

This tractor was obviously pre-owned- it is a 1994 model with a briggs and stratton 14hp v-twin-a friend bought this thing and was having someone else do the yard last year-when I arrived on the scene this spring, the engine hood was badly damaged to where the headlights are gone and those two wires are zip-tied out of the way-we got a new battery from Lowe's and it was good for 1 mow-on the second round two weeks later is when we found the battery was draining and not charging-PLASE HELP!the only info I could find is that it is a 'flywheel charging system '

Three possibilities come to mind...

1. The battery you bought was new but not good. You can have that battery load tested so you know it is good.

2. There is a drain on the battery even with the ignition turned off.

3. The charging system is not charging the battery.

To troubleshoot #2 and #3 one needs to have some knowledge about electrical circuits and charging systems along with a VM or DVM. We'd need to know the engine brand and model number and we'd need electrical schematics for the tractor and charging system.

Charging problems can be as simple as a bad connection and/or a corroded wire or it could be a bad regulator or charging coil.

Tech info on JD products isn't freely available and you gotta pay for their technical manuals to get schematics and such. The best option might be the dealer or an independent shop with a set dollar limit to diagnose. For that set charge you'd know what is wrong and how much it will cost to fix it.

Possibly an issue here is how this rider was re-powered. The original engine was a 14 HP Kawasaki and it likely has a modular ignition switch and external voltage regulator in the harness.

Let's first start with a known good battery, clean and secure battery terminals (on both ends), check the fuse and either disconnect the light harness or make sure the wires will not short and pop the fuse. I believe that your solenoid is a 4 pole- correct? 2 small wire and 2 big ones. When the switch is turned to start, one small wire to the solenoid will have power and one ground. The solenoid should be mounted securely. Take a multi-tester and see what is going on. To verify if there is a draw, turn the ignition switch off, remove the negative terminal- hook the meter leads in between the cable and the negative post. A draw will show voltage. To confirm if it is charging, hook up your tester to the battery when it is running wide open. Set on DC scale anything really about 12.6v will indicate a charge. Do the same thing on AC scale. There are a few possibilities. You should have a basic tester to help determine where to start. You would want to confirm first that there is no draw on the system and that terminals are clean and secure. These have both a stator under the flywheel which you can test for AC output out of the harness. There is also a voltage regulator which converts the AC to DC the battery can use. There are Kawasaki manuals on line and I think I have the JD manual for this as well. If you are looking for easy, buy a Battery Tender JR for about $25. That is if you have an electrical outlet near the tractor and leave it plugged in until you are ready to use it. That would at least extend the life of your battery. The PTO is taking current constantly when in use, but it will take a while to drain the battery down.

We have all hit stuff that was hidden in the grass. First time that I have heard of somebody running over a tomato cage, though. Must have been some tall grass! Since that episode caused the engine to quit, and since it took a service call to get it going again, my guess is that there is still something that needs to be fixed, as a result of that incident. You can either crawl under the mower and look around yourself, or pay someone else to do it. If you decide to crawl under yourself, I would advise that you jack up and block the tractor in a fashion that is secure and not able to settle or shift. Take the key out, and put it in your pocket, so no one is able to turn over the engine when you are underneath the deck.

It might be that your PTO clutch is on the way out, and is consuming too much current (amps). If it's pulling a lot of amps, that will tax the charging system causing the fusible link or fuse to blow. And, it will cause your battery to run low after some mowing as the charging system cannot keep up. Borrow an amp meter and check it. It should pull @ 5 amps. Keep the simple in mind too. Make sure all the connections to the battery, grounds, and clutch are clean. Keep us posted.
