Climbing Pink Queen?

On an impulse, I bought this rose at the garden shop at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. I can find nothing out about it, online or elsewhere! At first I thought maybe it was really Viking Queen, but it has started to flower, and it is definitely not (I do grow and love VK). Climbing Pink Queen is very beautiful! But I have no idea what its habit is like. Is there anybody out there who grows it who can tell me: does it re-bloom well? Is it polite or thuggish as a climber? Could it take a little shade (afternoon) maybe? How is disease resistance? Its advertised as a Brownell Sub-zero rose, so I assume its hardy.

You are in the same boat that I am in. I have 2 'Pink Queen' climbers that I bought a few years back and after
extensive research have not found any information whatsoever that such a rose even exists. I posted photos of it here on the forum and some people thought it might be 'Viking Queen' while another thought it was 'Coral Dawn'. I've checked through literature and online sources and have come up with nothing. Unlike you, I did not get mine through a reputable source. Mine were bought as body-bag bareroots at a cheapo store (bad idea and not one I'll repeat!) Unfortunately,
many of the Brownell roses are virused and mine are showing signs. The first few years, however, this was an amazing rose that rewarded me with lovely, fragrant blooms and nice, shiny foliage that stayed mostly disease-free. Note that I am in zone 4 so you would have better success with regard to winter-hardiness. Mine always died back to about a foot each winter and took all summer to build up to about 7 feet but it bloomed very well. I do not find the Brownell roses (of which I grow or have grown quite a few) to be winter-hardy in my zone but it is asking a lot of a climber to be hardy here! With the exception of 'Nearly Wild', Brownell roses in zone 4 are about the same as other hybrid teas and floribundas in terms of hardiness. This rose has a very unique perfume which I could never describe but it is very pleasing and refined.
The leaves were almost always spotless. Mine are on their last lives (showing signs of Rose Mosaic virus) but I can't bear to dig them up just yet. I want to savor just one more year of their loveliness. I hope yours is a clean
specimen because you will love it.....even if we can't find
anything on earth about it! LOL
BTW, I do grow a Brownell hybrid tea rose called 'Pink Princess' and have often wondered if 'Pink Queen' would be its relative because they are of the same pink coloration and similiar shape, although of course one is a climber.
Dr. Brownell did hybridize many, many roses that are now lost and many cannot even be found in literature. Its a bit frustrating.

Hi Celeste, thanks for your response! I'm sorry yours are showing signs of virus. I don't think this rose is Viking Queen, I compared the flowers and they just don't look the same (Pink Queen is a darker shade of "medium pink") Doesn't, to me, look like the pictures of Coral Dawn. Anyhow, she sure is beautiful! I guess if she gets to 7 ft for you in zone 4, I might expect something like 12 ft here in zone 6. Well, I guess I'll find out!

Teakettle, I don't know where in SoCal you are located, but I have heard complaints about powdery mildew with Pearly Gates. Since it is a sport of the Cl. 'America,' I suspect that may be true. Renae you would probably have to order -- probably wouldn't find it in a local nursery. But it's absolutely disease-free, and a free bloomer. I grow Carruth's Berries n Cream, and it has good disease resistance. When it blooms, it REALLY blooms, too. I personally find the foliage unattractive, but that's a personal problem, I think. Jeri

I have three Edens. They are incredibly gorgeous blooms, and if you're going for the cottage look, you can't go wrong with these. I have one 3 year old trained on my low front fence. It's got a spread of probably 7 feet each side, and is throwing new canes all along the horizontals (the new canes, called laterals, are the ones which will give a bloom, I think...). It is going to be covered with blooms in about 2 weeks, is healthy (in my climate), has not shown a bit of mildew or rust. The next one is only 1 year old, and has just now started considering growing. LOL. "First year sleep, second year creep, third year LEAP" as the saying goes, so that's all right...it's right on schedule. The third Eden I have is in a pot. It is growing like crazy right now, canes extending probably about 5 1/2-6 feet, and I've started working on pulling the large canes horizontal so that laterals will grow and give me blooms. It's about 2.5 years old now, and has started "leaping" early. I plan on transplanting it onto the fence in either late October or November. What I like about this particular rose is that for me, it's not fragrant. Which means it's perfect for the sidewalk fence - because then my neighbors and assorted dog walkers don't take the blooms. :) They leave the blooms on the rose, and it really creates a country/cottage look to the low fence. As a matter of fact, I like this rose so much I called the nursery yesterday to see if they had a 2-3 year old climber...and they don't. Give it some thought...my Edens, here in zone 9, are doing exceptionally well and that's despite me not knowing too much about roses in general. Best- Herding Cats

Please excuse my memory lapse. I looked at far too many roses that day. I did get one that is cold hardy, it's a Sub-zero, however, not an Explorer. I'm sorry, I do have a cognitive disorder. The name of it is Climbing Pink Queen. It says on the bag, hardy to -35F. and on the tag it says hardy to -30F. Which does make all the difference in the world really, 5 degrees is equivalent to half a zone. The rose is grafted but the planting instructions say to plant the pot two inches deeper than ground level and then to mound the soil three inches above ground level. That would put the graft about 4-5 inches under dirt. Very similar to the recommendations in the article that Annette posted above. Thanks for the article, Annette, it was very informative! Question...Would it not be wiser to plant it five inches below ground level to start with so I didn't have to worry about the dirt coming un-mounded? That could easily happen in torrential rain storms etc. I would appreciate your input on this question, thanks. We do not usually have much snow cover here. We get two or three snows a year to speak of and generally not more than 2ft. The rest is just flurries that leave and inch or eight. The temps are the worst of it. MeMo

I don't know but they look very similar to me !! As well as Aprils mystery "Stella"... On the gallery side. What do you think ? It's such a beautiful rose !! I've never heard of subzero climbers but they're gorgeous

Lily, I think you might be right. We need to get April here to compare. I found 4 Pink Queen at Christmas Tree Shops today for $6.99 each, I will find it out if my missing tag ones are Pink Queen this summer. Mine looks different than Celeste's (darker pink), but April's looks like a Pink Queen.
