Tree Rings
Comments (2)Carla: So much for another expensive piece of garden junk. It's hard to beat a good layer of an organic mulch and a little judiciously applied Roundup to keep clear the areas around trees. But the principle of attracting heat around the roots works in your favor when growing crops like watermelons and cantaloupes, which actually enjoy warm soil. You can double your crop and the quality of melons by using black plastic beneath a melon planting. I also use black plastic under tomatoes and peppers. Not so important in Sac perhaps, but vital in more northern climates. Regards to little Saute. Don Yellman, Great Falls, VA...See Morecoco fiber tree rings
Comments (4)No, alas, too rich for my blood, with the number of trees I have. What I have used to great benefit is discarded carpet, trimmed to the desired size/shape, and then covered with an organic mulch. Personally, I think if I had the money to invest, I'd try the rubber ones made from recycled tires, because the manufacturers claim they'll last 20 to 30 years. I would think the ones made from coco fiber would break down in a year or two -- I know the coir fiber liner sold for use in hanging planters only lasts one to two seasons for me....See MoreDawn redwood condition and tree ring question

Comments (11)I haven't chosen the hosta because i cant tell if a true "ring" is even possible with the thinness of my tree. I can get a picture tonight but the trunk is only 4" thick so if i take an average 2' wide variety, is it even going to look good? I am sure the trunk will thicken over the years, but it isnt going to get that big like a pine tree or even my camellia. I had thought of one plant directly in front of the tree and one on either side of the tree. Is that an odd way to make a ring for this thin tree, or would I be better off putting one directly in front and then one at either 45degree angle of the tree, that would make more of a 1/3rd of a circle ring around just the front of the trunk. I am sure i would be better off finding some smaller hostas, but with the trunk being so thin I think it would add some nice design to have the hostas in the 2' wide category. I would rather have them round around the tree than just a line per say....See MoreDan _Staley (5b Sunset 2B AHS 7)
