The Bishop

The more I see of this rose, the more I am impressed. It has made a long-lasting cut flower. It holds well, and has become more purple, and more fragrant, the longer after having been cut.

I have to say it is one of my favorite roses...I can't find anything about it I don't like.

Invasive seems to be a discovery word and over used. If you tend to your yard or garden one would be so surprised by what beauty so-called invasive plants can be with just a little care. Plants normally can be trained to be a beautiful sight no matters what kind. I like to stay away from cactus and thorn type plants yet they are even trainable and beauties. I have a pasture behind my house full of native and non-native plants and it is interesting what you can gather to make your yard/garden gorgeous. Store bought can be more tragic and pricey even though there are some beautiful plants. I am in West Texas and plants not only survive to live but struggle due to the wild swings in winds, droughts and excessive temperature swings. So where you might live is more of a blessing than you might realize. Go on the wild side and enjoy your gardening efforts don't be afraid but love. Make Love not War!!

What Roseseek said . . . But also . . . Grandmother's Hat doesn't have Octopus arms. It bells out GENTLY, but it is eventually upright. A slightly rounded urn shape. The canes have good substance, and don't flop about. As he noted, there are very few thorns. the canes are largely smooth, and easy to work (or walk) around. As to the suckering ... it happens JUST often enough to provide a recurrent source of new, rooted plants. We've taken advantage of that to share our original rose with many other people over the years, which is an additional joy.

Congratulations on your patience! BC will be floppier if you feed and water heavily. Of course feeding and watering heavily will also give you more blooms, so a bit of a trade off and balancing act. BC also tends to grow some low horizontal basals (in addition to those that grow straight up) even as a mature plant. The benefit to this is that you get flowers from the ground up, rather than just at the top. As a young plant though, it can just look floppy. Magpie is absolutely right. You don’t know if you’ll wait 5 years giving a rose tender care, to find it is a loser, or if it will turn fantastic. The challenge of rose growing.

@Mischievous Magpie (CO 5b) Wm Lobb is a wonderful old Moss! A thorny guy but VERY fragrant, rich and royal and velvety in color and a true classic. I think you will enjoy him, and he is going to look stunning next to Maiden's Blush--a brilliant combo! I have no business growing WL in a pot, but I desperately want him in my life again for awhile. If you wish to try another purple Gallica, I'd boldly recommend Hippolyte even though mine is still young. Francis' photo is charming! I adore my Ellen Tofflemire, too! Such a kaleidoscope of deep pink-mauve-violet! Both of these Gallicas are mannerly to my knowledge/in my experience. Tuscany Superb is very lightly fragrant but still my favorite rose ever. How big does The Bishop get when mature? Can he take some shade? I looked it up on HMF and it is so beautiful. I have added a few once bloomers and I guess I need to see if they will hate the heat here before I add more, but that is such a lovely rose...

I am hoping that Olga and Robert can confirm whether The Bishop that I obtained from Mrs Keays Garden in Calvert County Maryland is the same as theirs. Mine is purple, double, somewhat cupshaped, with a lighter purple or lavender on the back of the petal. It has the same light petal substance that I find with Shailer's Provence. And it is powerfully fragrant. Leonie Bell was very fond of this clone and urged me to be sure and get it. I did, and have enjoyed it immensely. It is growing near tall western trees and gets maybe 3 to 4 hours of sun at most. It blooms early (now in full bloom) with Shailers Provence. Best, Nick

I have mine with some afternoon shade, and it is wonderful. I am training mine up one side of an arch, and it seems to like this arrangement. I've seen it grown on a lattice trellis mixed in with clematis. This rose is very easy to work with. I've not seen any problem with the heat. It begins blooming early and keeps pumping out the blooms.

Nick, Mine gets to be a very deep purple with age. I agree with the same petal quality of Shailer's Provence...another favorite of mine. They both bloom at the same time for me. I have about 5-6 Shailer's Provences scattered throughout my yard...I will do the same with The Bishop once it suckers some more.

I was about to get The Bishop at the nursery today but they were all covered in powdery mildew. I was a bit surprised that a newer introduction would be that affected... :( I ended up with Abraham Darby which was next to The Bishop with no mildew on it at all...

For those of you indicating the various types of roses you find at Lowe's, Home Depot, and such.......they must be quite different where you are. All I ever see are either Hybrid Teas or Knockout (usually limited to pink) roses.

The nurseries are somewhat better, though I have yet to see an Alba or Gallica at one near here.

I'm starting to miss Sherando already.

Robert, do you mind if I ask you where you got your plant? Is it grafted or ownroot? Do you find it as powerfully fragrant as Nick does? I know that noses vary in their ability to smell certain roses, just wondering. I happen to have an opening on a trellis near Alchymist, and I think they would look nice together if they bloom around the same time. A clematis is a given.

Carol, I am not Robert, but happened to know that his Bishop is from Sherando and my Bishop is from this place too. Wonderful rose. I can start cuttings for you if you want, even though my success rate with cuttings is not so high.

Olga, I would love for you to consider sharing your 'The Bishop' with me too. I have some Gallicas & lots of unusual roses. I have a lot of rooted cuttings going too. Email me if you would like to think about it. My rose list on my page is hopelessly out of date. I have tons more not listed. I have been coveting the Bishop for awhile. :o)

Carol, I will start cuttings as soon as blooming is over, some time in June. Don't worry about trading, I can do it :)
Adrienne, I will send you cuttings in June that you can root. I think it will be easier then send a rooted plant across the country. Please let me know if this is OK. If you don't root cuttings, I will try what I can here. I don't think I can fit anything else in my garden, so the same as Carol, don't worry about trading.

I am pretty good at rooting cuttings Olga. Are you sure you don't have room for a Pompom de Bourgogne? It's a sweet little compact bush. (Gallica?) The foliage looks like mini Gallica foliage. Mine is getting ready to bloom and has a few suckers going. It really is adorable. I got it at Heirloom, they say it is a Centifolia.

All that Olga said is true. I do think The Bishop and Alchymist will be stellar. I've got The Bishop with Sombreuil on one side and White Cap on the other of an arch. The scent is wonderful and powerful to me.

I may have some suckers developing. I'll also try rooting some cuttings.

I bought the rose sold as Velours Episcopal (The Bishop) from RVR this spring. It had only two flowers which looked similar enough, but I want to reserve judgement until the plant starts growing so that I can compare the habit of its growth.

My The Bishop (from Sherando) has this wonderful mannerly climbing growth on nearly thornless canes which I think will be very versatile.

Robert, your combination of The Bishop with Sombreuil and White Cap sounds wonderful. The Bishop really appeals to me and the recommendation by you and Olga makes it even more appealing. I'm excited about having the opportunity to grow it! Thank you. Oh, I've been meaning to ask you. Do you have Aptos aka Dr. Robert Korn? Would you like to have it? I don't have room in my garden though I really like the blooms. I bought it based on RVR's description of size not realizing it was Aptos and I know that Aptos gets very large in the south. I could send it to you if you want it. You have a lot more room than I have in my wee garden. Let me know.

Olga, I have great faith in your rooting abilities :-). Thank you again. If you find you have a spot, I have plenty of roses to choose from and would love to send one to you. I have some gorgeous Iris that need dividing, as well.

Well, I have plenty and will be delighted to share with you. I warn you, I mostly have no idea what named variety they are. I plant Iris and Glads and promptly forget their names. Roses are another matter all together, I never forget their names. I do have some absolutely beautiful Iris of all colors and all types. I will divide them and ship some to you if you don't mind having ones that I can't remember the names of :-) Yay! I would love to share them with you!! Alot of them were pass a longs to me from rose friends. They should be finished blooming soon and I've already marked some of the LA Iris to send Randy so I will send you a selection of different types of Iris too! I can label them with the colors/types so you know where to place them and the names of the few I actually remember if that is okay :-)
