Question Regarding Rodgersia

Hey all,

Just wondering about the growth rate of Rodgersia...I have (below) a trio of Rogersia Podophylla "Rotlaub" I purchased this spring, they've been growing happily for a few months now, and I really love them. I was just wondering, though, what sort of growth rate to really expect. At the moment they all three just consist of one stem, and I was wondering how long I should expect it to take for additional stems to appear. Will I get some additional growth this season, or should I just content myself to more in the next few years?

I would suggest they are somewhat similar to Hostas and/or Peonies -- expect more growth (i.e. more/multiple stems) in their second and subsequent seasons.

Thanks everyone for your reply. I knew this would be the place to ask. Interesting that this plant seems to do okay in full sun as most websites I visited say part sun to shade. Then again, in the north we often can grow shade loving plants in sun. TerryÂs comment about the plant "sulking" if too dry does mirror what I read on the internet: too dry might not kill the plant, but will reduce its vigor. On the opposite end of the spectrum, in one article it was mentioned that the person had a few of these plants and the ones in bog-like conditions died out after a few years. Maybe it just doesnÂt like winter wet conditions as some plants donÂt. Anyways, you have all helped me realize that this is a possibility. I would have to amend the soil, perhaps add some nice compost, and water during dry spells, but it might be an interesting look for a very sheltered corner. Interesting that Petasites Japonicus is hardy as well. That might make it more difficult for me to decide which one to go with. In general would you say that both plants (Astilboides Tabularis and Petasites Japonicus) are just as slow growing? Regards, Glen

There is a ton of it growing at the Stony Brook Watershed outside of Pennington - I don't know if they ever have plant sales but you could collect seeds. Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve in New Hope, PA sells wildflower seeds. I don't know when their next plant sale is. I have some which flowered this year and I could send you seeds when they are ripe. The plants are about two feet tall, a good deal shorter than the ones at the Watershed and the seed came from Maryland originally. P. smallii died here after going strong three years :( but P. 'Pikes Peak Purple' FINALLY bloomed after skulking for the same time. I'm guessing it will not make it through the winter, having bloomed. Very pretty while it lasts.

Has anyone recently purchased an Ethan Allen sofa that could answer this question for me? Please check under the seat cushion to see the big label on the frame that says where it was made. I was told only some of their furniture is made in the US and the rest is made in Mexico!

Just a thought. my niece reserved a block rooms for her wedding. This does not necessarily mean it's a discount rate or the cheapest rate. I don't remember why, but I questioned the pricing. I wound up doing my own reservation at cheaper rate. So, as Outside suggests, call. And as Faftris mentions, they often shuttle service to and fro for the guests and of course uses the booked hotel as base.

There was no need to plant 3 of them. Rodgersia builds gigantic clumps in no time.Rather aggressive. It will choke smaller neighbors . There are two species which are more willing to bloom than Rodgersia podophylla : Rodgersia aescuifolia and sambucifolia. All of them have rather long rhizomes so they have actually slowly running habit.

Yep, in the right conditions (moist, moist, moist!) they will take off. I'm at work so can't post a pic, but I'll try to post a pick of my potted Rodgersia this weekend - he's a big boy, what a beauty!

If your soil is kind of dry, they will grow and get bigger if you keep them well watered, but they might go dormant in the summer. Mine do, and then come back in late August and September.

Thanks for all the comments! This year they each had a few more leaves, and even a few new ones popped up a foot or 2 from the parents. Unfortunately, they really got too much sun/wind and were scorching in spite of daily waterings. I moved them a week ago into a spot that's almost full shade...so hopefully they will be happier there...I was tired of seeing their leaves get totally disfigured.

I've read they're slow to establish. I planted 2 this year and it took months before additional stems appeared. Both were small plants from 1 gal pots and are in 2 different locations. They have multiple stems now & are 18"-24" high. They like lots of watering through a dry summer, so I've tried to remember them in their shady places. :o)
