Newbie needs reassurance, pat on head

Just need to know if I'm on the right track.

So, last Wednesday, I set up a small bin, just a plastic tub and a lid about two feet long, one wide, and one and ahalf tall, drilled with holes.

Started with a good 2-3 inches of torn up cardboard, then a few greens (worried about putting too much in) then a hefty amount of shredded paper, then substantially more greens (after i learned the c/n ratio for paper and cardboard is like 300:1)

The greens are mostly kitchen scraps, coffee grounds, dead flower blooms and arbor vitae leaves. And one cup of urine.

The top layer is a thinnish layer of dead roots and leaves.

As for water, I'm not really sure. The shredded paper won't give any water when I squeeze it. I admit, I don't know how things are below that level.

The bin is sitting on a spot of newly hoed earth.

When I lifted the lid tonight, I smelled a slight old food, garbage smell.

Is this the start of anerobic activity, or have I simply not given it enough time to do anything yet?
