Pest or Disease on Tiarella?? pics

What is this on my Tiarella? Can I just cut off the infected foilage and will it regrow? Is it nematode damage or something else?

Each brown speck has a yellow "halo" around it. These are all over most of the leaves on this plant.

just some insult to the tissue resulting in browning..

windstorm.. hail....

as you snip them out.. see if you can tell if they were only the first leaves out .... if so.. frost/freeze is also a possibility ... sometimes when this type of damage is very slight ... it wont show or burn.. until the first couple real hot days... did you hit near 90 over last weekend??? .. like we did?? .. did it mysteriously show thereafter???

i see a lot of clean leaves there ... so i r/out disease.. as it wouldnt be that selective ...

or if it was a bug.. the bug could be long gone... since newer leaves are clean ...

I have snipped and wil relax!
We did have a couple of 90 degree days here. It seems to be mostly the older leaves and all new leaves are fine. Come to think of it we did have a lot of wind yesterday but it would show on other plants then.

Craig, Posting pictures here is pretty easy. I've posted instructions in this forum many many times, but will do it again in hopes it will help. One of the easiest ways to provide your photo to be embedded into a post is to upload it onto an image hosting site such as Photobucket, Flickr, etc. That should be pretty straight forward, and the individual sites will give instructions on how to get your photos uploaded to their site when you sign up. Once your picture has been uploaded, find its web address by right clicking on the image and copying the image location. Some sites may even provide the address in a text box below the photo for your convenience. Let's say, as an example, that the address of the picture you want to post is http://somepicturesite.com/yourpicture.jpg To embed the picture into a post, use the command img src="http://somepicturesite.com/yourpicture.jpg"> For larger pictures, it would be very very very helpful to add a width attribute. Do do so, just add width=600 after the second quotation mark. 600 is a reasonable width for Gardenweb forums and won't mess up the formatting of your post causing people to have to pan around to read the text. So, for larger pictures, the command above could be rewritten as: img src="http://somepicturesite.com/yourpicture.jpg" width=600> Note that I had to use special characters to get the commands above to show up here without turning into pictures, but you can use them as shown (with the correct image location, of course).

I don't know about the holes- they look like snail or slug damage to me but I understand that there are other pests in your area, including the iris borer. You can examine for the borer by looking way down in the leaves near the rhizome. Some people just squish them. The borer lays its eggs in mulch, like what you have around your irises. You should clean up all of the leaves and debris from around your irises to about three feet and dispose of it to be sure you have eliminated iris borer eggs. The first shot looks like rot to me. Irises cannot stand to be mulched, and the tops of the rhizomes must be exposed to the sun. Push on the top of the rhizome to see if it feels spongy. Be sure to clean out all leaf litter from between the leaves of your irises. That's really the main trick to growing irises. Good luck! Renee

Cut off all lvs close to ground and keep them away from the soil and dip pruners in a weak bleach solution after every cut, spray with either neem (preferable) in morning to repel chewing critters and slow blight or an insecticidal soap with chili powder and garlic in it (hopefully from scapes from garlic you are already growing), do not water overhead or have any splash, clean up all litter from the ground under toms - every speck. Not a dogwood borer, which looks more like a wasp (though it is a type of moth), don't you think? This insect is the Redheaded Ash Borer, known to attack dieing hardwood species of almost any species. They are taking advantage of an existing problem and are not the cause of it. These insects are a type of beetle. Thus, their flying wings are tucked under and hidden from view by the outer wing coverings called elytra. Just as you rarely see the flying wings of ladybugs....until they lift up the elytra and zoom away. Sorry for the loss of your dogwood.

naw.. the insult or injury was weeks ago .... and 'seeing' it was caused by the hot temps ...

perhaps this is a clearer example ... bang your leg ... a few days later.. a horrible bruise ...

the yellow tissue is a sort of bruise from whatever happened to injure the tissue ....

any hail storms a few weeks back????

are these wintered over leaves????

regardless.. you should be all set ... crack a cold one for me ....

It looks a lot like a fungus or bacterial problem to me. Yes, they can affect either newer or older leaves depending on the type of disease it is. They usually only rear their ugly head when conditions right for the organisms to grow. Some are a one time deal, and the plant looks great again. Some become continuous problems, and it is then best to remove the plant.
