I think for the first three years, roses growth habits are continually evolving. Many roses are weakly floppy in their first full flowering year. Tip the length of the canes to lessen the overall weight and in the second year, the canes will develope more girth. By the third year, as the canes get woody and lignified, secondary thickening will give the canes more rigidity and strength to remain upright. No-one should really get rid of a rose because of its growth habits until some degree of maturity has been reached - obviously, if you have a disease sump or you hate it, then send for the fork and spade but they will take some time to settle into their final habits of growth. I see this a lot in austins which often have blooms too heavy for their canes, ending up lying drunkenly on the floor....and yep, I have used those hooky things along with a range of impromptu supports for wayward roses.

Hmm ... I'm no expert but I think it looks ok ! Everything above it looks good and healthy still . Maybe keep taking pics in case you have to contact the vendor . Hope someone else chimes in here! beleive it or not , Madame oger was my first rose ! And I bought it at a sears hardware store of all places. The blooms were exquisite and the fragrance wonderful! It started my addiction! Enjoy your rose!!

It looks like another stalk but it is growing down towards the roots instead of up. Not really sure what to do since I have no idea what it is. Any help is appreciated and thank you in advance.

Yes, Magpie, when the water in the cells of the cane freezes it bursts the cell walls and causes that mushiness. On the other hand, canes that are dried out and withered looking have probably succumbed to dehydration rather than freezing. In the prolonged deep polar freeze we all experienced there was a lot of damage done. But it is early days yet. Way too soon to write off any roses. I won't even begin to prune until the beginning of April here and then just a preliminary prune. I'll wait until I see real growth starting before I begin to do any serious pruning. And I never declare a rose dead until mid-June when it's had at least a good month of real warm weather to grow in. It takes more than just a few days of warm weather for a rose to really wake up and begin to grow. Even though we feel the warm temperatures the plants roots are still in some very cold soil. It takes a long time for the sun to heat up more than just the top inch or so of soil. The rose can not begin to grow until the roots are warm and taking up nutrients again. That's where the old adage about waiting for the forsythia comes in. The forsythia will not begin to bloom until the soil has warmed up enough for it to flower. And that's when the roses should begin to grow too.
