Canes going lateral

I have a rose from RU that has developed two good-sized canes. Unfortunately, they're drooping. It's a South Africa, which should be growing vertically, unlike spidery Austins. My question is how to deal with them in the future. Should I prune them way back before the snow possibly breaks them or just wait it out? In either case, should I stake them next year?

As a side note, is there any rose that doesn't look better during the fall? I'm fairly new to roses and I've been so impressed with both the size and depth of color to my roses now that the weather has cooled and days have gotten shorter.

Thanks.
