Two things to do right now.
Take a straight shovel and dig down and cut the roots at the drip line from the sick Belinda's Dream.
Take a deep breath and don't consider taking out the other four bushes.
BUT you do need to move fast on the sick one. Spray the sick area with high holding hair spray. And put a probably very large garbage bag over it, tied around the base. And dig it out.
Messy blooms right now on Belinda are common, and a function of thrips, humidity, rainfall and heat. (Yes, I, too, have B D right now).
You want to stop RRD from spreading within your garden.
Take out the bad one fast. The temps are just beginning to rise. You want any mites that are onthat bush to be gone. soonest.

Thank you, thank you Ann. I was definitely forgetting to breathe. You're the voice of wisdom for so many of us. I guess one never quite gets over the shock of seeing that horrible, horrible deformity that is RRD. I feel bad, because I don't know how on earth I didn't catch it sooner. I'll spray the hairspray and tie the garbage bag tonight. I won't get to dig until tomorrow. I will post my pics tonight, though, in hopes it will continue to help others to see what to watch out for. Your word "hyperthorniness" really stuck in my head and clinched my diagnosis. I shudder to think what could have happened if not for your expertise on the forum and online.

I think I have it, too!!! Just dang. These were new last year and shot up like 6-8 foot canes. One on the other side did it, too.

I can't imagine how it drifted in here, the only multifloras I know about are about 3/4 mile away.

Hope you don't mind if I post some photos, made them fairly small, don't mean to hijack your thread. I'm major upset if it is. Do I have any recourse with the vendor or did they pick it up after they were planted? I've seen discussions where I believe this vendor uses multiflora rootstock. Can crop tighter for better closeup if necessary. Just what I don't need now, am already overwhelmed, don't even have any hair spray.

I think you're ok. The leaves ARE slowly turning to greenish red and that's what they are supposed to do. And the leaves themselves are 'normal'
RRD is a disease of excessive, abberant and unexpected growth. Stems turning because one side grows faster than the other. That reddish color is there on modern roses, we're just not used to looking for it. It took me four years before I stopped panicing when tea roses put out red growth (which is normal for many of them.)

There is so much RRD upwind of roses in the eastern US that all it takes is one mite from any of those infected roses to be carried by a puff of wind and dropped on your and my roses. Brooklyn Botanic Garden got RRD ....in the middle of highrises.
I know it's hard to think of air transport, but sometime google search Chinese dust clouds reaching California or Sahara dust storms reaching and damaging coral in the Americas. And some of the dust particles are the same weight as the vector mites.

I agree with Ann. I really do not think that is RRD.

I am so sorry to hear about this for anyone. After losing about 50 roses to it over the past few years, I just cringe to even see a red leaf unfolding anymore. I am very paranoid about it and don't feel bad that you did not see it right away. I did not either. In fact, my husband saw it on one rose when pruning and then we started looking. The growth is not always on the new area of growth. It can hide for a time.

Thank you for the reassurance. My daughter stopped by, and I showed her and shared my concerns. She ordered me not to dig them up myself (have been working pretty hard for my age lately). I've looked at the various threads and photos on it here, so feared the worst, not that worse things can and do happen.

They were/are looking pretty good this year compared to what they looked like last year, didn't water in time with Bayer Advanced, but may just take my chances another season, so I'll let them grow on and watch them. I can hardly believe it and am saddened for the OP. Maybe if she gets her photos up, there will be more hopeful news for her, too. Sure glad I hurriedly took those photos. I was making plans to have them dug out and didn't know how many might be affected. Thanks so much!!!

Are some roses naturally resistant to it? There's no cure nor preventive, right? And if they do fall victim, you can't plant another rose in the spot for how long, indefinitely?

I've noticed some very small, elongated white things on the buds of many, not all, this year, googled and came up with a good page about various attacks they are prey to, but no photos. I think I do have what they call midge (first instinct was thrips but they are colored?). The remedy was to cut off all the parts of the plant affected, am loathe to do that and am inclined not to and take my chances. Any preventive or remedy for that? My gdaughter has my macro lens which is about the only way I could capture those, well I could try one lens. What do any of you do about that if it is what I think it could be? At the least, it is likely to spoil the blooms, but I can endure that disappointment.

I hope this helps. Ann, could RRD be on wild blackberries? That is the only thing I can find nearby, but they are downwind of my RRD infected Belinda's Dream. I'm at a loss as to where this mite came from. Does anyone know of RRD cases in Upstate SC, which is where I am?

odeyssey, those buds look normal except for the sepals, but I do get elongated sepals on some buds.

Again, it could be the result of cold weather on new growing leaves. Or over spraying. Have you sprayed fungicide recently?
Once I used a too high concentration of fungicide and I had a bunch of curled leaves.

I also answered on the other thread. Let's wait to see what Ann says.

I found RRD on a Carefree Wonder in downtown Greenville at Falls park. I spent over an hour the next day trying to find who takes care of the park. I finally found the person and they had no idea what RRD was. I explained it to them using info from Anns book and directed them to the plant. I encouraged them to DIG IT UP and they agreed to do it. I checked later and the bush was gone. The remaining CWs are still there and I see no abnormal growth. This is suprising to me because the abnormal growth on the affected shrub was SO BAD that it had completely wound itself into a birds nest. It almost looked contrived it was so perfectly mimicing a nest.

Other than that I have not seen any other in the area....but multiflora is EVERYWHERE.

So sorry about your rose. RRD is disgusting.

It's the sepals, AND also the leaves. Look at the edges of the affected leaves. So different from normal leaves
And in the second photo, there's a compound leaf at center made up of three leaflets. The leaf that comes from the center and points to 11:30 is an asymmetric mess, not because it's been eaten by insects. The edges show that it grew that way.

Ronda, the wierd thing is that that garden had herbicide damage on about a fourth of the roses several years ago.

I've seen RRD on wild roses in most of the counties as far east as Charlotte and in northeast Georgia. It's out there.

Could you tease open the blooms buds that haven't opened but are so sick? And if they are or aren't green petals, take a photo. And share it.

I do spray Roundup a lot, but think I am pretty careful with it. No choice with the darn Bermuda grass. Ronda, at least that gives some more hope that a bad infestation could remain isolated to one bush. I am in Anderson, by the way. Good on you for educating the caretaker in Greenville.

I will try to tease the sick buds open tomorrow when I get home from work and will of course share the pics. I have cut and bagged the parts in these pictures (on Saturday), so they might be too dessicated to tease open, but I will try. I'll also check for more sick buds on the mother plant.

I have a better solution for the Bermuda grass. I live on a golf course with Bermuda fairways so half my yard is infested. Instead of Roundup use Grass-B-Gone. It kills the Bermuda and leaves the roses alone. It does take a little while to work but it does work.

Aw, thanks Carla. It's really the pits, isn't it? The worst feeling is that since it has hit, I feel I need to constantly be on guard. Obviously, I'm making mistakes with that though.
I'll try the Grass B Gone Carole. Bermuda grass is such a curse. Can you believe the guy we bought the house from was proud of having spent a bunch of money to put Bermuda sod everywhere?!

My original obviously sick bud was dried to a crisp in the garbage bag, so I hunted around on my RRD bush and saw this, which I teased open. Is the formation of those little leaflets on the sepal indicative of RRD?

One of the reasons I asked about the petal color was purely selfish....there's another disease that's similar in Europe but that has blooms that are green petaled, regardless of what the color was supposed to be.

OK the sepal picture opened. That's normal. Do you know the meaning of bilateral symmetry? If you were to put a mirror down the middle of your photo from 11 o'clock to 5 o'clock the two sides would be mirror images of each other. And that's how it's supposed to be.
The earlier picture you posted of a bud...the sepals were overgrown by leaps and bounds and I think the bilateral symmetry was gone.

Thanks Ann--ok, I can see the bilateral symmetry on the first bloom (btw, the dessicated very sick bloom, dessicated though it was, looked beige before it crumbled in my hand).

This sepal, on another bush is not symmetrical. I feel worried because the sepal at 6:00 is growing a leaf on its tip. I didn't see this type of thing anywhere else.
