you dont wanna deal with a whole egg thats been sitting in a pile for, say, a long time (not that I would know or anything.....)

Oh, good point, Doris! I turned a pile last year and eggs were popping left and right. The stench lingered in the yard for an hour.

Some eggs are fine in a compost pile but you want to bury them in the pile.

And maybe encase them in a loaf or two of old bread ;-)

Common sense should tell anyone to not put whole, unbroken eggs in the compost since they would rot and get really stinky long before the bacteria that digest the material can make any inroad through that shell. Broken eggs can be added to the mix with no problem.

jollyrd, You said you have dogs, when I drop an egg on the floor while baking/cooking, I have three dogs come running as fast as they can. Sad they know that sound and now know to come and help me with the clean up. Let me say they can clean up an egg off the floor faster than I can. They do not like the shells though so that goes into the compost/gardens. And eggs are so healthy for the dogs. Adds a shine to their coat.

I've been making egg white omelettes and have been throwing away the yolks. My wife can't throw them away. Maybe she would be OK with putting them in the compost? Although, I'm not sure I like the idea of egg yolks in the compost? I don't put meat in there either. I'm on the fence on this one.

Break them, bury them deep, stir them in a little, and they'll be fine. I'd try to keep to a half dozen or fewer at a time.

If the eggs come from free range chickens and not the factory farm chickens that never see sunlight and are confined to a space less than an 8-1/2 x 11 sheet of paper, the egg yolk is the substance of life. Adding the egg yolk to a compost pile would therefore be very good. How many of them to add at any one time depends, however, on the volume of your compost pile. Small volume compost piles, such as a garbage can composter would be can handle far fewer than could a compost pile that is 4 x 4 x 4.

I dont plan to throw away a good egg, I was only talking about bad egg which does not happen often. So I dont think I will go overboard with it.
Dogs are outside only, they dont get to roam in my kitchen and they get spoiled with real bacon, real bones and other real meaty treats enough. I wash and brush them but they are loved even if their coats are dirty (which is most of the time).

If I leave the chicken house in winter with sixteen eggs, three of them dirty and no customers, I will heave three said eggs toward compost 20 feet away from plowed driveway. I always hope to shoot them through the mesh, but sometimes I get a high fly going on, and the egg lands somehow unscathed in the center of the pile. Now that I've experienced popping into a seventh month old egg, I'm more likely to specifically aim for the egg with my pitchfork during the next turning.

Here's how many undesirable eggs I will put in my compost per year:
eggs I don't want to eat or sell + any other eggs I don't want to eat or sell = eggs in my compost

I throw broken egg into boiling water and then dig this boiled egg near some plant together with shell. It slowly feeds my plant (found it good for cucumber)

Weirdly I have never composted an egg until this post and then lo and behold I had to surreptitiously remove a box of eggs from aged mother's pantry before she gave herself salmonella. And those of you with ancient relations will know this sort of thing has to be done very sneakily. They were 6 weeks past their use by date but 'perfectly fine' apparently. DH and I had a pleasant time throwing eggs at the compost that evening. Very satisfying feeling.

It is! I used to throw mine into the woods against trees, but my dog would find unbroken ones. I have a hard time controlling myself when I'm coming from the chicken house with eggs if a car goes by. Yesterday, two walkers came by as I was leaving the coop with eggs in my hands, and I said to them, "You think I can hit a moving target?"

I wouldn't hesitate to put eggs in my pile either, if they make it that far. My dogs love raw eggs too. I just don't think they would be in the compost for very long.

AnnPat - how many chickens do you have? I almost can't wait for mine to molt so I can compost the feathers. The poo and bedding is already in there.

I have too many chickens. I started with six. Then I got 11 more. Then when I read one night that there are "blue" chickens, I impetuously placed an order for 26. (Turns out that "blue" chickens are really gray.) I've lost several chickens over the last four years, and I now am down to 32.
