Calling all geeks. Help me fill my sci-fi garden (off topic)

I have started a sci-fi garden. So far it is small and only has two plants, but would like to find additional ones. I've got Star Trek German Bearded Iris and Blade Runner Sedum. Let me know if you can think of any plants that would work within the sci-fi group - I'll even take plants from the fantasy genre (elves, werewolves, vampires, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, etc.) Superheros also and option. Stan Lee's gotta have a plant named after him somewhere...

Also, share your favorite sci-fi series, book or character. Mine are :

I love Firefly! Also Babylon 5, Continuum (especially the first season) all Star Trek and the original Star Wars :)

For the look of exotic or other worldly, I would consider bee balm (especially red) and other 'spiky' flowers. Really big and really small flowers/plants might be fun, too.

If it's just names, then I don't really have any recommendations...but almost any Latin name (that isn't too similar to the common name) will be reminiscent of Harry Potter. (LOL)

Got some shade? There are a series of scifi hostas. I have Captain Kirk, some kind of Death Star hosta (I think that was the name--or something like that), and some kind of Vulcan hosta. There were other scifi names also.

When it comes to roses, I can't think of any scifi names right off the top of my head. Sorry.

Edited to add that I checked my records. The three hostas are Captain Kirk; Vulcan; and Dark Star (named after the cult movie by John Carpenter).

Ok, ok..I am givning in! I am on the prowl for either those birds or a couple of green singing finches. Jojo, you just made me realize how much I miss hearing the singing of birds in my home.lol It made winetr go by so much better than the dead silience in my home. I think I know who named those birds..lol. Such cute names that only a kid or two can come up with. I would love for you to raise them along side of us, all the way to the brood, hatchlings, and babies. I would love that Jojo since I have a thing for birds. Just love them and you have yourself such a beauty of a pair! Hi Al, Jodi, Josh, Jodik, and Laura! I missed all while I was sick.;-) Laura. Ok y'all! So the Photography presentation last Firday night went fine. I had fun doing it. I would say there were only about a dozen ladies there but all seemed to enjoy themselves. After I did my presentation I scrolled through all my 214 (yes, I know--a Lot of photos) and talked just about every one! I'm long winded. BUT, I was in my MOMENT. As I went though I shared with them about the rocks I name. There were a couple that I hadn't officially named and they helped me with another name for one....Penguin Rock. To me it looks like a podium-they showed me a penguin. :-) I think they had fun thinking about it. IT was kind of like we were all laying on the grass looking up to the sky to see what formations the clouds were making! My whole intent was to get people to see the greater beauty and peace in nature all around us--even the small things! It's so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of life. I knew I did that for at least two of the ladies there. OK, so the Fair Photos. I went last Sunday there to the Fair. Out of the 9 I entered 1 won 3rd place. The one that won was my poppy photo. It was interesting as I viewed all the photos. A lot were good especially the ones that won. But then sometimes I couldn't figure out what the judges were looking for. I know they want a photo to "pop" and the poppies did in color. They have volunteers there who watch the building and make sure the photos are monitored. I spoke with one of the gals there and it just happened to be Kay Hendrickson, one of our local photographer/artists. She is known for her poppy photos. I think she said they received about 1800 photos this year. So, anyways, just want to say Thank You to all for your encouragement and specific comments. Hi H/W, Yes, skeeters are literally a pain. We have a salmon stream running through our property and there's a still pond part of it where they hang out and party in between taking chunks out of me for their dinner (husband never gets bitten). I am really personally opposed to DEET etc. and that definitely curtails my evening outdoor activities. There's some times when they seem to be worse. We have fish in the constructed pond that seem to take care of them and that is also moving water. We got one of those electric wasp things you hang out on the deck and it zaps a lot of wasps and a few skeeters. Every window in this house is screened and that helps too. The expense and bother of a fence were the very LAST thing we wanted to do. Since we plan to stay here we see it as an investment; we either forget gardening and surrender to the deer or fence in a portion of the lot we want to grow vegetables and flowers, leaving the rest of it to wildlife! We get black bears around here too and while they would just break down a fence they're not after the roses (go for fruit) Deer also leave a trail behind them (literally) that looks like it came from a giant species of hamster. Something else I don't want in the garden anymore. Nervy creatures, we caught one drinking out of the pond! (counted the fish and none disappeared through her slurping) There are some forums here about deer and one very funny one I read yesterday; the poster wants to nominate his resident doe for the deer Olympiad (she jumped a high fence and used his rockery as a salad bar) - so even a fence isn't 100% deerproof. Having visited a rose centre who have a deer fence grown over with roses that add another foot or two to the height works for them. A really thick rambler rose can withstand any grazing from the other side and their livelihood depends on protecting the 700 roses they have on their property. don't know the problem with the links. They can also get into your house and eat paper, clothes, or anything else they feel like eating. Sometimes they'll chew on something that's wet, just to get moisture. And once they're in your house, they'll wake you up in the middle of the night with their chirping songs. The Chinese consider them good luck when in the house. But they do eat a LOT of things including your food as well as the pet food. A baby one means there are more somewhere. Put out fly paper with cornmeal on it as a trap. They will jump on and you can take them outside. If you leave baseball gloves or other leather items outside the crickets will chew up the leather and ruin it. So it is OK to have them but they are not completely benign. Good Luck !! And I hope your headache is way way better. c

In that case, you might like to grow some passion vines (for the alien flower effect) as well as carnivorous plants (for the carnivorous effect)

I'll have to peruse my yard. Scifi plants I don't think I have many. I have some fantasy ones. Mainly LOTR if that's acceptable.

But off the top of my head I can think of Dwarf Sea Holly "Blue Hobbit".
And Salvia Galadriels Tears.
Dark knight/night rose might fit.
Gorgeous colouring, and vigorous as heck. Not sure how zone hardy it is though.

An orchid that might be fun to add in the summer months is miltassia Shelob "Tolkien".

I just checked HelpmeFind roses - which is a great tool you can use.

There are 2 floribundas, 1 tea (not hybrid tea) and one miniature rose named Firefly.

On a side note. I used to teach with Nathon Fillion's father in Edmonton. Been to there house. How's THAT for geeky!! LOL

The only plant genre I can think of with more creative names than roses is the daylily world, and there are tons with science fiction names. The clearest series to come to mind is the "Spacecoast" series, such as Spacecoast Jedi Knight. Most of the colors look decidedly alien as well.

As for roses, there is a Space Invader listed by Carruth on HMF, but no US vendors. Armstrong and several others have the mini Space Odyssey. There is a Vulcan rose, but it's not available in the US. Over a dozen roses use the word "Fantasy", many of whom are available in the US, including a pink Fantasy (Jackson & Perkins) and a red Flame of Fantasy available several places.

Sounds like a fun plan!

There is a Magnolia Galaxy.
There are also some daisies.

There's a Captain Kirk hosta from Bluestone Perennials and a Ferengi Gold daylily from Roycroft Daylily Nursery or Oakes Daylillies. :D

It's not a big issue -particularly if it isn't in commerce here- but I believe the old rose Vulcan is named in reference to the Roman god as opposed to the Star Trek race.

There is a Coreopsis variety named 'Flying Saucers.' There's 'Death Star' Pride of Madeira, Echium candicans. I also know there's 'Dark Star' Ceanothus.

In addition to the others mentioned, there is also a hosta 'Stargate.'

If there are any Doctor Who themed plants out there, I'd be all over them!
