My Tulip Tree has Turned Black...Help!

smallmouth1

We have a 12 foot tulip tree whose entire trunk and all limbs have turned completely black. It is a thick crust rather than a powder. The leaves are fine but there is some dying off of lower minor branches, (2-3' ones.) I have heard aphids and their honeydew are the culprit, causing a fungus but it's got even the local nurseries stumped. What is causing this black crust and what can we do? It used to be a beautiful tree and we love the species. It looks like someone burned it! Any ideas/remedies?
