Drift Rose and OSO Easy

I've got a beautiful 5hx8w trellis upon which I grow 3 Gruss An Aachen. Pale pink, 6 ft. now. There because I had a shady garden and it tolerates shade.

Lost a tree and now my garden sizzles in the afternoon.

Started looking at low-growing roses and came up with Drift and OSO Easy.

Sweet Drift looks like it will go perfectly with my German rose and fill in the 12Lx8W space. If I buy enough.

Showed DH both plants and he fell in love with OSO. Hmmm

My problem with OSO is that it's not rosy, it's posy. I really love the rose form and this one's the simple flower form that children draw and pastry bakers put on top of a cupcake. It's very much like a wild rose/beach rose.

So, my questions...

How many Sweet Drift should I buy? Do they really spread to 3 feet or is it more? I continually overplant.

I have yet another bed that's getting cooked..how wide does OSO spread? Maybe I can plant one and keep peace in the house.

The Oso Easy roses stay relative compact and low, 3-4', except for Fragrant Spreader, which can get quite wide. Non I have, have typical high centered many petaled blooms.
They're semi-double, having two rows of petals which are loose, not tight. They make up for it in colors. Paprika, Mango Salsa, Peachy Cream, and Strawberry Crush are quite colorful.

This is for you Karl - Re: Strawberry Crush-OSO Easy. She was the very last to wake up & get moving, of the 10 OSO Easy babies I planted last season (under this similar heat~wave situation) Peachy Cream & Honey Bun were the eager beavers getting visited by Jap Beetles only occasionally! They are all doing great despite the ~~heat~~wave~~ blooms are just fading faster as expected.

Late bloomer-Strawberry Crush once decided to get moving, developed many longish stems all around (3ft+), where I suspect large clusters of blooms are developing which thrills me ~ however they are not growing upright & I wish she didn't need stakes/wires to harness her stems. I decided to prune a few to see what happens. From your experience, is this SC's habit & will I have to install a few stakes & wire up to keep her more upright?

Appreciate your thoughts!!! TIA

I have "Strawberry Crush", "Paprika" and "Cherry Pie". They were purchased in late June as the end of season sale this year. They were in 4-inch pots and I planted them in 10-inch pots. They grow very quick and big. Just like you said, long stems with glossy healthy leaves. But there were only two flowers on "strawberry crush" and three on "Paprika" so far. And they didn't last for three days under the hot sun!There isn't any bud in those two plants now. Only long stems with nice looking leaves. "Cherry pie" is better, nice flowers last more than a week. But this is the first "wave" of flowering. I don't see any new buds yet. Compared to "Flower carpet", these OSO Easy are a bit disappointing. Our "flower carpet" are always in flowers, even the one I started from a stick early this year. Maybe you can try pegging to see if they will rebloom better? I was hoping they might rebloom better after they got mature. Probably not.

OSO Easy Strawberry Crush is about 2' tall and 5' wide in my garden. The 2" blooms are a creamy yellow and pink blend. Never a speck of disease and in constant bloom all season. OSO Easy Fragrant Spreader is a compact mound about 18" tall and 4' in diameter. It blooms in flushes. Small pink and white single blooms. No disease. Makes tiny hips. I deadhead Strawberry Crush, but not the hundreds of blooms on Fragrant Spreader. Each flush covers the spent blooms of the previous flush. I don't have a photo of Fragrant Spreader. Another ground cover rose I like a lot is Lavender Friendship. It reminds me of a teeny tiny Veilchenblau. It has an open form and blooms all season. Mine is about a foot tall and 5' wide. No disease in the 6 or 7 years I've had it.

I think they have moved to no-spray and this bush probably defoliated from blackspot. We have terrible blackspot with middummer humidity and frequent afternoon and evening rain wetting the foliage so don’t be too discouraged by that. Blackspot is a leaf fungus and affected leaves often drop. Different regions have different strains so a plant that defoliates in DC may do very well in Michigan. it is worth noting that the plant is vigorous enough that it is putting on fresh foliage that looks pretty healthy.

My experience; As the bush matures and roots get established better, it will send up thicker more upright canes. Many young rose bushes go through a floppy cane stage.

I thought it might just be due to their youth the limbs splay to the floor. Unfortunately SC's floor is river rocks & fear the very soon flush of blossoms will burn considering the weight of the clusters.

I went ahead & installed stakes & wired around to hold the stems up ~ hoping as well for them to thicken in that more upright position.

Mango Salsas are behaving similarly as SC but fewer long young limbs w/ tons of cluster-blooms that tend to splay as expected. I am so pleased w/ how all are growing & putting on their shows continuously!!!
