Question on SC OSO Easy Rose

Anyone growing Strawberry Crush-OSO Easy Rose?

I got 5 of the OSO Easy series (10 baby plants last year) every single one is doing great & were undaunted by the very long heat-wave & dought! As all others & as expected, in full-sun, the blooms faded just a bit sooner ~ no problem!!!

I do have a question about *Strawberry Crush* ~ the only one that woke up latest in Spring, set sprays of blooms last & sent numerous very long arching stems. I kept clipping a few of those long stems to encourage them to thicken & even grow more secondary stems, w/c she did. However, some of the 2ndary stems were as well getting long & only a few flush w/ spray of buds.

Should I just keep clipping the stems that get too long, arches & w/o signs of bud sprays? Also she doesn't flush blooms as readily as the other OSO Easy cousins? Wondering if this is just true of Strawberry Crush only or is it a growth problem?

Appreciate thoughts & experience if you have one! TIA

I have "Strawberry Crush", "Paprika" and "Cherry Pie". They were purchased in late June as the end of season sale this year. They were in 4-inch pots and I planted them in 10-inch pots.

They grow very quick and big. Just like you said, long stems with glossy healthy leaves. But there were only two flowers on "strawberry crush" and three on "Paprika" so far. And they didn't last for three days under the hot sun!There isn't any bud in those two plants now. Only long stems with nice looking leaves.

"Cherry pie" is better, nice flowers last more than a week. But this is the first "wave" of flowering. I don't see any new buds yet.

Compared to "Flower carpet", these OSO Easy are a bit disappointing. Our "flower carpet" are always in flowers, even the one I started from a stick early this year.

Maybe you can try pegging to see if they will rebloom better?

I was hoping they might rebloom better after they got mature. Probably not.

Thanks for your input Kathleen! My 3 Paprikas are none-stop bloomers w/ just a short rest periods ~ I do clip the nearly spent blooms to push re-flush ~ it seems to work!

Honey Bun & 4 Mango Salsas are the most enthusiastic bloomers w/ reasonable rest times ~ am very happy w/ them.

Peachy Cream has gotten taller but does not arch nor splay as much as SC altho I did help w/ a 2ft wire fensing as she is in a less sunny site & tends to follow sun w/ her still young woods. Oh hopefully S-Crush will be better next season. If I allowed her as she wished, she would perhaps spread easily 5ft + width & full! I wish her to be a bit more up-right! Her blooms are absolutely beautiful _ I wish I know how to post individual frames to show. M-Salsa as well flushes awsome sprays of blooms!!!

Here is my story about Parade. Some years ago I bought a small one gallon Parade from Chamblees - dont think they carry it anymore. Due to the demands of nusing school, it stayed in that one gallon pot for a couple of years - it got watered but little else. Cant imagine why it didnt die. Finally, after graduation when I had some time, I planted it in the ground by a large arbor. Within days, it started growing - like Jack in the Beanstalk! I was amazed. Now, it is huge with thick, and yes, thorny, canes that are easily trained on my arbor. It is a wonderful bloomer with a beautiful fuschia color. I love it! It would be worth hunting it down - I just got an order in from Roses Unlimited - they send healthy plants ready to grow. Getting it in band form, it would probably be next year before you would see blooms. I checked, Chamblees doesnt list it. ARE sends beautiful plants, but if you didnt want to spend that much, sounds like RU would be your best bet. I love my Parade and know you would be happy with it. I moved Zephrine Drouhin from another home. After 3 years it put out a few blooms. When it died it was not mourned and not replaced. Parade is an older rose that should be used more - it is tough, a survivor, and blooms well. I do spray so cant comment on disease hardiness. Your money will be well spent with this rose! Judith

This is for you Karl - Re: Strawberry Crush-OSO Easy. She was the very last to wake up & get moving, of the 10 OSO Easy babies I planted last season (under this similar heat~wave situation) Peachy Cream & Honey Bun were the eager beavers getting visited by Jap Beetles only occasionally! They are all doing great despite the ~~heat~~wave~~ blooms are just fading faster as expected. Late bloomer-Strawberry Crush once decided to get moving, developed many longish stems all around (3ft+), where I suspect large clusters of blooms are developing which thrills me ~ however they are not growing upright & I wish she didn't need stakes/wires to harness her stems. I decided to prune a few to see what happens. From your experience, is this SC's habit & will I have to install a few stakes & wire up to keep her more upright? Appreciate your thoughts!!! TIA

knockout roses - question re color changes

Those of you with full grown KO's, could you post a picture for me standing at a small distance so I can see the whole plant, and see how wide and tall they get? I have two I planted this year, one by the fence, one in the middle of a large flowerbed. I love both of them and they have beautiful blooms & are really growing, even in this cool weather. I'm thinking about moving the one in the flowerbed near the fence because it seems they may get too tall and bushy for my flowerbed. I would like to say this. Growing KO's (and Carpet Rose which I also love) as first time roses for a gardner are a great step to growing "real" Roses. lol. Next year I plan on adding a Rose that's a bit harder to grow because the KO's and the CR's have given me a little self-esteem in going one step further! Any ideas on another easy Rose to grow that's a step up from the KO's? :) Aren't Tea Roses the hardest one's to grow?

We mass-planted Peach, Coral, Apricot, Sweet and White in our garden for landscaping use a few years back. They have been bulletproof in terms of performance reliability, foliage disease resistance, heat & cold tolerance. Peach has the most handsome foliage and the first to bloom, coral has the most dwarf form after six years in ground, apricot is similar to peach but paler green leaves, and sweet/white are the tallest and their blooms come in the last. They all are beautiful in each’s own way and offer great impacts in the various locations we assigned them. By the way, White’s bloom form is the most double, has that old garden rose look.
