John Deere 325 Oil Leak

I've got a 1997 JD 325 with a 17HP Kawasaki single. It has just over 400hrs on it. I bought it used about 6 yrs. ago. It has been an excellent tractor which I use for mowing, snowblowing and tilling. No problems, doesn't burn oil, never broke down. This past winter it developed an oil leak at the gasket where the case splits, just behing the starter. It got bad enough that I just pulled the motor, purchase the overhaul gasket kit and plan to make the needed repairs in the next day or two.

The Question: The only issue I have is the leak at the gasket. With just over 400 hrs. on it but no problems why would I want to tear it down any further. I'm leaning towards just splitting the case to replace the gasket and the lower crankshaft seal. I also would like to know if there is anything to watch for when splitting the case since I don't the service manual for the motor.

Any input would be appreciated.
