You can do what I do. Go the the nearest JD dealer and ask to speak to the top mechanic. If they comply, and they always have for me, ask him for advice.

No tricks to that, it's a pretty straightforward install. The new gasket holds a lot better, and will solve the problem. Make sure to get the torque specs on the oil pan bolts when you pick up the gasket and seal.

Thanks for the feedback. I got the motor split and cleaned up this evening. Should be back together tomorrow night. The motor shows a little wear but not bad for 11 years of year round use. Should last a few more before something else wears out.

I am working on a motorcycle engine with various problems ... It is now running reasonably well...

However the engine has a slow oil leak in which the crankcase will empty itself onto the floor which will take about 2 months. (no its not a Harley :)

I suspect there is a hairline crack in the cases and I am wondering if any of you know of some type of liquid sealant which might be dumped into the case, sloshed around, and then emptied out, followed by letting it dry for some period of time.

I few years ago I helped someone seal the gas tank of an antique 50 Merc using this process. I am wondering if that might work with my scenario.

Although I fear that I would get sealer into the oil pump pickup...

JB Weld on the outside. There is nothing that you could use on the inside that would not cause lube system damage. A coating of good RTV sealant (black or grey so it looks fair) might also work in the seam area.

If your motorcycle has a 2 cycle engine, the following may not work.
The oil pan on my Pontiac rusted and started to leak. I used blue silicone on the outside and this sealed the leak. When I sold the car 3 years later, the pan was not leaking.
