Oil Change on John Deere 325 lawn mower
Comments (1)I assume this is a riding mower/lawn tractor? This would be better answered in that forum However, I'll try to help. This machine has the Kawasaki engine. You can go to the JD dealer and pay a premium price for the maintenance kit or "build you own kit". Their kit has oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter & spark plugs. If you just want to change the oil & filter, pick up 3 qts. of oil and a filter. You probably don't need the full 3 qts. , so add 2 (or better yet 1.5) and check. Top off a bit at a time and look. The filter will fill and take "some" after you start the engine. Oil filters you can use- Wix Purolator Hastings Baldwin AC MotorCraft 51394 (P)L14476 LF410 B33 PF1233 FL836 A NAPA Gold 1394 or CarCraft Premium 85394 are a Wix....See MoreJohn Deere 325 oil leak
Comments (10)engine tech, Thanks for your comments. My JD325 has the 18HP twin Air Cooled engine that runs great and has never used or leaked any oil. I switched to Mobil 1 10W-30 after a 50 hour breakin. I put 35 to 50 hours/year on it. I change the oil and filter once, at the end of each season. I also make sure the air filter is clean several times a year. I very seldom hear anything about the 325 tractor. I don't know if it is because there were not many sold, or if they just have been trouble free. (Or they all died). The only thing I worry about is the fact the K70 transmission is no longer made, and could present a problem if it ever failed. It is my understanding the K71 later version cannot replace the K70. Hopefully, my K70 will last for many years. Charles Ranheim...See MoreJohn Deere 325 Garden Tractor Belt Issue
Comments (13)Thanks for the tip about the JD forum, rcbe! I didnâÂÂt know that existed but I visited there last night (havenâÂÂt posted anything yet) and it does seem that all those âÂÂJDâ types hang out there! LOL I took a pic with the tension rod engaged and disengaged. I took an eyeball measurement of how far the pulley moves forward when it is engaged and it is about 3/4 of an inch which sounds about right to me. Now here is the interesting part: Thanks to jimmy56 (and I have no idea why I didnâÂÂt think of this!), I put the deck back on and got out the string and, when the tension rod is engaged the length of the string is 60 and 1/4 inches. The belt for the 48 inch deck according to the documentation (M143019) is 63.386 effective length (outside circumference) and is supposed to be .410 thick making the inside curcumference just a hair short of 63 inches. That is 2 1/4 inches longer than my string measurement! I'm not sure what to make of this but I have made absolutely sure that the deck is assembled correctly and attached to the tractor correctly. I can't vouch for all of the parts (like the deck hanger) being the correct part but I was told it was 'fine' the last time it was used to mow (which has been more than a year now). Thanks for all the suggestions to date. This is a great forum full of great people. I think I will cross post this over to weekendfreedommachine forum and see if any of the JD heads have any advice. Stil very open to any other advice if this latest post clicks with anyone!...See MoreJohn Deere LX176 blown fuse / ignition unit
Comments (13)Mownie - Your posts are fantastic. Thanks. I do have the JD manual but as you say, the schematics are not great. I do have the seat switch unmounted so no frame short there. Pink wire doesn't seem to be the problem - fuse blows with X3 and X4 connectors connected (ignition on, seat switch depressed, and all other components and switches disconnected) but does not blow when X4 disconnected and pink wire 800 isolated and connected alone to its post on IM. It's odd that with X3 connected, no individual wire in X4 will cause the fuse to blow, but when all the wires in X4 are plugged in, the fuse will blow when the ignition is on and the seat switch is depressed (and all other components and switches disconnected). Makes me think the IM is bad but I'm still not sure. Also, I did find that if X3 connected and X4 disconnected, connecting yellow-black wire 410 in X4 to its post on IM will cause fuse to blow (again with ignition on, seat switch depressed, and all other components and switches disconnected). 410 goes to ground. Again this makes me think the IM is bad. Also, I'm not sure how IMs go bad. I was just mowing the lawn, hit a bit of a bump (nothing unusual) and the tractor just shut down. I guess it's just as likely that a circuit board just dies as some other components. I figure a wire shorted due to a physical abrasion or corrosion would more likely be somewhat intermittent while my problem is not at all intermittent. Any additional thoughts before I replace the IM?...See Morecranheim
