What To Do With Piles of Slimy Lawn Cuttings?

My neighbor had agreed to give me his lawn clippings last month so I could begin a compost pile. I already had a leaf mold pile but I wanted a regular compost pile as well.

Here's the problem: I live alone and don't have a lot of things to compost so the grass clippings are already adding up quickly in their smelly, slimy matted pile. The only other thing in the pile right now is miniscule amounts of coffee grounds and tea leaves.

What else can I mix with the grass to balance out this compost pile? What would happen if I just let a pile of nothing buy grass clippings sit for a year? Would it break down by itself into something useful?

Thanks for your help.
