Don't ignore the antique roses.

I can't offer any other recommendations because I've never lived on the West Coast, but I do know that it's not unusual to find a set of antique roses that will grow well in your region (even as they will not grow as well in some other regions of the country).

I wholeheartedly agree with york rose. You can grow some gorgeous roses in your area that would never do well for me. I suggest you post this question on the antique rose forum and you may end up with roses that will be unique in your neighborhood, will not need to be sprayed and will have a much nicer garden presence than gangly hybrid teas. And, you'll be preserving a part of rose history. Good luck!

The rose that can ONLY be grown in a cool coastal climate (and therefore does wonderfully for me in my coastal fog bank) is Rhapsody in Blue. Cannot take temps above 80, but loves fog. Also take a look at International Herald Tribune, Lovestruck, Hot Cocoa, Darlow's Enigma (speaking of bulletproof) and generally any single. Singles love cool, but anyone with heat will just fry them before 9 am.

You're right Kathy; my IHT is lovely right now but just wants to die in the summer. The same was true for Ebb Tide and Route 66, a single purple rose I really loved but which shriveled after five minutes of hot sun. It should feel right at home in the PNW.

Thanks Ingrid & Kstrong. There are a few listed there that are intriguing me. I had Darlows Enigma once but it rarely bloomed for me. I had gorgeous, vigrous, healthy foliage, & it grew like a mad weed, but terribly lacking in flowers.
I do love the singles. Blueberry Hill is fantastic here.

My garden is a hybrid - cool summer nights, hot days from mid-June to mid-September. I've discarded more roses than most casual gardeners will ever grow. You can take a look at my plant list. I don't grow many HT's or Florries. If you like that look, one of the best rose in my garden for repeat and disease resistance is Sophia Renaissance - 6.5 feet tall, good repeat, disease free, grows and blooms like grandiflora.

What specific problem are you trying to address? Failure to grow? Disease? Lack of adequate repeat? If you're a member of HMF, you can search my plant list using the search feature and search by class.

Thanks Berndoodle. We have cool nights here, but we also have cool days - rarely above 70. I think that's why some of the roses that I have tried that are supposed to be bullet-proof have failed. I would hate to think of the actual dollar amount I've spent for no good reason.

I have found out that disease resistance is also different from garden to garden.
I gave my sister (1/2 mile away) and my friend (3 miles away) each a Precious Platinum, they both had severe problems with BS.
Our Precious Platinum does fine year after year with no BS problems. All 3 roses came from the same vendor.
So, BS is really a mystery to me.

There are lots of roses that take cool summer climates. All of western Washington is cool summer, and we grow fantastic roses here. In my garden I have Oklahoma, Memorial Day, The Prince, Aloha, Buff Beauty, Maria Shriver and Marie Pavie. the first two are always slow to bloom as they would like more heat than they get here, but when they do finally start blooming (like July) they are very high quality. I don't currently have Peace, but it does very well here, the flowers are ginormous in our cool springs and summers.

Many of the Austins actually do very well here, given sufficient blackspot protection, that's their weakest point. All the antiques do well too, except the teas really want more heat than we get. But the once-bloomers like gallicas and albas and centifolias do very well. Then again being in Oregon you'll get more heat in summer than we do so teas might do well for you.

Check in with your local rose society, they should have recommendations for roses that do well locally. We have a list on our local society's web page you can check out too.

We aren't coastal, but we're otherwise in a similar climate.

Rugosas might do well for you. Fru Dagmar Hastrup is a beautiful light pink, fragrant, and stays a manageable size. You also get hips that look like cherry tomatoes and colored foliage in the fall. Darlow's Enigma is not doing a whole lot yet for me, either, but you might want to try Lyda Rose, another hybrid musk. Mine is in a fairly shaded spot but is performing wonderfully. Another wonderful rose with repeat blooms is Rose de Rescht--gorgeous bush even without blooms, but it blooms a lot and has great fragrance. Gallicas are superb old once-bloomers. They're right up there with rugosas for great performance in my yard with neglect and no spray. Belle de Crecy , a gallica, might be my very favorite rose of all (I love purple roses!)

Slightly OT, but definitely related:

How many of you in the Northwest are familiar with roses that do well in Ireland or Great Britain (or adjoining areas across the English Channel, such as Normandy or "BENELUX", for that matter)? I would expect that roses that do well in those areas "across the pond" would also do well in the Pacific Northwest's coastal areas. Am I right about that?

I, too, garden in a no-summer-heat area. I second the votes for Rhapsody in Blue, Lyda Rose and Buff Beauty. Another that actually does better in these conditions is New Zealand.
