thorny invasive tree-like thing taking over HELP!

I've never seen this before here in New York. It's suddenly everywhere. Thick stems with short thorns, palmate leaves (5 leaflets to a palm). Looks like a tree coming up. When I pull it up the stem breaks off cleanly underground, like from a root runner. It is taking over my raspberry and monarda patches and creeping into my garden. What is this thing and how do I get rid of it? I'm thinking Brush b Gone.

County agents have answering machine...awaiting them.

Thanks for any ideas on what this is.

One of your pulled stems taken to your county agents office will give you immediate answer. Al

The tree should soon be in bloom. I'm almost positive that it's not mislabeled but I'll try to get a good picture to post. I doubt that there is another tree like it anywhere close since our house is pretty much centered on our 72-acre farm. Right after I posted the original message I tried digging some of the seedlings up and transplanted them to pots to see how they'd fair. So Far so good. I've never sent plants before but when I got trees from Arbor Day Foundation they're roots were in something that looked like agrosoak or soilmoist. Would that be a good way to send them to you folks who wanted some? I recently bought that spray that goes on plants leaves to help things like rhododendrons survive drought. Would that be beneficial for shipping?

utility people will only trim the branches touching the tree or they will top it! Ever see a palm tree with his head chopped off??? In real estate people are always searching for that property with Mature trees but no one wants the responsibilities and $$$ that comes with their upkeep. We have had to remove several HUGE dead Pines and probably 15 diseased or dead BIG laurel oaks (they are short lived) We used people looking for work that knocked on our door because they would do it reasonable (Which is still alot) THENSo remember to think before you plant. And especially think before you purchase a home full of mature trees,they will cost you money. That said I'll take my totally treed lot (one camphor tree included) any day!!!!!!! And yes I still have some dead trees(snags) left in my yard for the woodpeckers and others to enjoy As far as the invasives you have to really keep up on them. but honestly,I have enough laurel oak saplings and sabal palm starts I personally consider THEM invasive! I moved into a house with a hackberry right up next to the house. I cut it off about 4 feet high, drilled some holes into the stump at an angle, filled the holes with extra strength RoundUp and painted the top of the stump with RU. It still tried to come back. When that happened I cut the top inch off, repainted it, and refilled the holes. That seemed to take it out. I don't like using herbicide, but this seemed like a minimal impact approach.

I looked up aralia spinosa. Not it. Leaves are palmate, not pinnate. Good guess, though. Sounds much like it.

I'm not a techie with pictures/computer. If I had precise directions, I'd give it a try.

County agent wants to see it. They are also stumped. I think a migrating bird dropped it. We get the most unusual birds here for a day or two because we're near a reservoir with forest and field all around.

After searching images, I believe it's a rubus...invasive blackberry. It has traveled very fast in just one year! They say cut the stems and paint with glyphosate.

I love the wild blueberries and raspberries on my property, but this thing looks like trouble! It's a gonner...

When I first saw this thread, I thought you had what I have EVERYWHERE - but mine is not tree-like. More like a vine that roots itself. I always thought it was some kind of wild raspberry (never saw fruit, but the vines look like it). I never looked it up. I just keep trying to eradicate it in my yard.

Maybe you and I have the same thing. This stuff is nasty. It gets caught on your legs, and if you pull it without realizing what it is, it sure does hurt.

If my daughter ever remembers to bring home the camera I will post a photo.
