Seeds normally suppose to have everything there for sucessful germination, so they do not need extra nutrients on the start. Some seeds have oily surface and need to be soaked in water with touch of liquid soap. One of those I met were arisaema draconitum. I know many people use drop of liquid soap just in case for all their seeds. It sounds logical if seeds are very old one might try soaking them in beer to juzz up enzyme system. I read it on JL Hudson website as recommendation. I do soak up majority of my seeds in warm water/lukewarm/ for 3 days, changing water about every 12 hrs. I also sometimes soak seeds in hydrogen peroxide. Since I never had any control groups to call it experiment I can not say if hydrogen is helping or not. Generally my seeds germinate very quickly and I see no harm in using hydrogen. I have a good guess that seeds are very smart and will germinate despite our best efforts. ;)

You can certain soak them from Friday till Monday. Be sure and not cover the crown, just the roots. The daylilies will love having the water. You could change the water at least once to be on the safe side as its so hot and who knows what nasty bacteria grow in this hot weather.

I planted seed this year and grew almost 400 plants. I waited until late May when it was really warm. I prepared a 3 inch deep tray, sowed the seeds, covered the seeds and soaked it with water. I put it in the HOT greenhouse. They sprouted in 3 days. The key is moist soil, hot soil and lots of sunshine. When large enough, I transplanted 3 per pot, 124 pots. I lost about 10 pots over the entire summer and this summer was HOT, hot, hot and dry, dry, dry. I watered the transplants daily. I've traded and given away about 40 pots and I just put 70 or so in a pit made from concrete blocks and heavily mulched the pots with fine, black compost. I'm going to plant them around the yard next spring.

I soak all seeds at least 4-5 hours. In filtered water. It is not true that floaters germinate less than sinkers. I tested that theory several times last year, zero difference. I put the covered trays on heat mats , set the thermostats at 87. I usually begin to see some heaving the soil in 48 hours. I use Pro Mi HP and sometimes a handful of worm castings mixed in and wet it from the bottom up with seaweed extract before I plant them. If I wet it from the top all the perlite floats to the top and I have to remix the soil before planting. No lights at all until 50% of the seeds are up. They don't need light to germinate and with the heat mat and covered trays lights can make it too hot. Sun and covered trays is a disaster, it cooks them.
