Best Red cutting rose??
Comments (3)Black Magic is a tall dark red with perfect form that lasts forever in a vase. It has no scent. Ingrid Bergman is a short dark red that lasts and has a bit of scent. Veteran's Honor is more of a medium red but it also lasts and has a good berry scent. Taboo is my darkest red, but it doesn't do very well for me. I know other posters here have had better luck with it than I have. I spray all of these but I believe Ingrid is supposed to be disease resistant. Black Magic is not....See MoreAbsolute best cutting rose
Comments (47)Just for sake of clarification: we are talking good, LONG LASTING CUT flowers. Because I love SDLM but it has never been a good cut flower for me. I never even cut Elle because it blows so fast. Below I list not my absolute favorites but a few that are good cut flowers for me (in some cases the two are the same) Here are a few roses I love for cutting. Papa Meilland if cut in tight bud (1 week-10 days) Rouge Royale - if cut in tight bud Bride's dream - if it is not damaged by thrips Valencia Arizona Floral Fairy Tale (to my surprise because it is a shrub or flori not a HT) Osiana Imperatrice Farah Black Baccara Tineke Karen Blixen (not always but often) Frederic Mistral Memorial Day...See MoreWhat's your favorite rose for cutting?
Comments (24)Most of the dark velvety reds make decent cutting roses for me. I have Veterans' Honor,Let Freedom Ring, Beloved, Liebeszauber, Olympiad, Ingrid Bergman, Grande Amore, Royal William, Dream Scarlett, and The Passion in my garden that are good red cutting roses. As far as some of the other colors, Light Pink, Brown/Tans,and most yellows don't last as long as most other roses. Also a lot depends on the amount of substance the petals of the flower have. The more petal substance, the longer they last and unfortunately generally the less fragrant they are--just like most florist roses. A few "others" that are good cutting roses for me are Terracotta, Mavrik, St. Patrick, Marilyn Monroe, O'rilla, Cary Grant, Pope John Paul II, Spellbound, Folklore, Elizabeth Taylor, Welcome Home, DayBreaker, Preference, Hot Cocoa. Also, some mini/miniflora's are pretty good for me as well. Just depends on the substance of the flowers. Try This Is The Day, Fairhope, Dr. John Dickman, Power Point, Ingrid, Denver's Dream, Ricky Hendricks, Camden, Leading Lady, Peter Cottontail, Rachel, Nancy Jean, Sassy Cindy, Jupiter, Conundrum, Charismatic, Irresistible, Dr. Troy Garrett, Coffee Bean, and Glowing Amber. These have been pretty cutting roses in my garden. Make sure you cut your stems underwater and use something to feed the blooms like plain sugar, 7-up/Sprite, or a professional product like Chryshal. I also add a few drops of bleach per vase that keeps bacteria from forming a black plug at the bottom of the stem and keeps the flower from sucking up water it needs. Recut the stems and refresh the water every 3 or 4 days to keep them fresh an extra 4 days or so. And, keeping them in the fridge at night if possible will extend the vase life of cut blooms. Sorry if this is too long and too much overkill on the subject. John...See MoreBest roses for cut flowers?
Comments (12)Below are my best FRAGRANT roses for the vase in my zone 5a for the past decade. Below large raspberry-red is Big Purple, left is Old Port, yellow is Honey Bouquet (yellow that doesn't fade). White is Bolero (best white for cut): Dark pink is Evelyn Austin rose, color deepened with molasses fertilizer. Below are Bolero rose (white) and Sonia Rykiel (pink) .. color got deepened by watering 1 tablespoon molasses/vinegar per 2 gallons of water at pH 9. I get pale pink from that rose for the past 2 years until now. Below big pink is Pink Peace rose, and the little spray of tiny blooms are "Annie L. McDowell" thornless rose, scent of lavender and lilac. Both perfume the entire room. Right yellowish orange is Crown Princess Mag (last 5+ days in the vase). Below orange is Versigny rose, heavenly floral fruit. Yellow rose is Golden Celebration, smells like cup-cakes. Pink rose is Evelyn with floral peach scent: Below Lavender rose is thornless Deep Purple floribunda. Yellow is Honey bouquet. Light pinks are Francis Blaise. Deeper pink is Pink Peace. Below big orange rose is "Sweet Promise hybrid tea", almost thornless, smells like apple blossoms. Austin Evelyn is pink in the middle, low-thorn Frederic Mistral is upper right. Below bouquet has pink peace on lowest left, Liv Tyler medium pink, with W.S. 2000 upper red, and Frederic Mistral is light pink upper right. White is Bolero. Below left pinkish purple is Wise Portia. Upper pink is Sonia Rykiel. Middle big pink is Liv Tyler. White is Bolero. Orange is Versigny. Yellows are Honey Bouquet. Red is Firefighter (one bloom perfume the entire room)....See Moretriple_b
