Rosa arkansana and a question about RRD

I have a seed-grown Rosa arkansana that I'm worried about. The thorns are pliable, all the way from the base to the end. Nothing else is unusual. The leaves, the flowers, everything else looks normal. What do you think? Is it possible this rose has RRD in spite of everything else looking normal?

I don't grow this but I am certain that there are some very experienced forum members who will reassure you. Many rose species have very pliable canes although will get woody at the base with age.

Someone in Missouri who used to post (about a decade ago) on Gardenweb) watched RRD wipe out the multiflora in fields near his home. In those same fields there was R. arkansana which never showed any RRD symptoms. I hope sometime to re-establish communications here with BW and find out how things there have evolved.

Arkansana was not one of the roses that the men in Nebraska first saw RRD on.

In my own garden, I wait until I see three symptoms before declaring RRD and reacting to it.

I'm going to post this much and then try to find some results from about three decades ago that might mention arkansana.

cziga, Can't tell. What happened at the apical end of that stem was aberrant growth. But it could have happened because of a very limited exposure to Round-up or a related herbicide, or to its roots getting hit with a slug of fertilizer. I have seen that symptom followed by RRD on Dr. Huey and on some other climbers. That isn't RSD. As I understand it, RSD is a disease of early spring. For a long time, not much was known, then the folks at UC Davis had a post doc student who was very talented at culturing out and identifying viruses and she worked on RSD and did find that it was a virus. RSD isn't just at the terminal end of a cane, but is all along the cane (and the cane, from the previous years growth is of normal growth...the only thing wierd is the earliest growth from spring.) We have seen RRD in Canada and there's some history of it out on your Great Plains. But RRD is so unmitigatingly ugly...beyond the ugly you've shown there.

Multiflora/RRD removal question

Two of us spent almost 3 hours yesterday cutting multiflora canes then painting them with RoundUp. We are probably only a third of the way done in getting to everything I'd like to remove. A handful of the bushes deep in the fence line had canes 3"-4" in diameter so we had to use a hand saw instead of lopers for those. We probably cut down 40-50 bushes and maybe all but one or two were diseased. I'm afraid there wouldn't be enough WiltPruf in the state of TN to supply all I would need for this job! ;-) Nor would I want to spray (or pay for!) that much RoundUp. The best news is that the acre or so I did last year with this method still looks free of multiflora. Even without spraying to entrap the mites I'm thinking I'm better off than just leaving it all growing. I've got my helper coming back in a few days for another round. I'll try to get some pictures to post. Thank you everybody!

Cygon isn't available any longer. It was taken off the market. We don't have an alternative that is systemic in the plants and thus can kill vector mites when they land. There is not anywhere near enough info out there about beneficial predaceous insects...I keep looking. The reasoning behind using wiltproof ties to the way that the flightless eriophyid mites get around- they are dropped by breezes when the breeze slows down. Thanks to the dissertation of Abdullah Kassar at WVU, if they land on a rose, they sense it and stay. If they land on a non-rose they try to catch the next breeze away. What we hope is happening with the wiltproof and other anti-transpirants is that they land on the wiltproof and reason "not rose" and leave. So as to how often to spray wiltproof...you'd like to keep the leaves and stems coated. Spray accordingly.

It wouldn't be the first time that a biological control agent introduced by an agricultural agency has caused conniptions in other groups through unintended deleterious effects on nontarget organisms. Or, I'm afraid, the last time either. I've seen roundup damage on roses before, and it seems to me that some of the symptoms of RRD I've read of on this forum do not appear with roundup damage, like the excessive thorniness. The question is: has RRD really produced significant control of Rosa multiflora, to a point that is advantageous to the ecosystems it had invaded? Next question: how much damage is RRD causing to the ecosystems where it's invaded cultivated landscapes - has there been an increase in pesticide use to combat it, a reduction in rose cover and food production for birds, a switch by homeowners to different plants that have a different impact on the local ecosystem? Third question: how does RRD affect native species roses in the areas where it's been introduced?

How close is your seedling to R. woodsii and R. suffulta?
I am trying to remember if suffulta is still recognized as a separate species or if it is under woodsii or arkansana by current genetic research.

Reasons (I found the paper, (Allington, Staples, and Wiehmeyer, 1968) and both woodsii and suffulta were shown in that paper to be susceptible to what I think of as classic RRD symptoms. The suffulta that was sick was on the Dismal River, a couple of counties north of North Platte. I did visit that location and there are still roses there and there were NO RRD symptoms upstream or downstream (about 1/10 of a mile). I still wonder that it disappeared there.

RRD is a grow stimulant. If the only thing is thorn flexibility- those thorns near the base should be hardening before those that are more apical. Are the leaf margins symmetric within themselves and are the sepals fairly constant in their design?

I'm not sure how close my seedling is to the species you mentioned. The seed was from Prairie Moon Nursery.

The leaves and sepals look normal at this time. I will post pictures tonight.

That's beautiful.
All the leaves are symmetric (no nonsense about odd leaflets coming out here and there). No overgrown stipules.

The best part is that the flower is 'right' because so often assorted things go really wrong with floral parts: sometimes no receptacles, sometimes no anthers or emptyness where the stigma should be and odd colors on the petals.

If it were my rose, I'd relax and enjoy it.

All the leaves are symmetric (no nonsense about odd leaflets coming out here and there). No overgrown stipules.

The best part is that the flower is 'right' because so often assorted things go really wrong with floral parts: sometimes no receptacles, sometimes no anthers or emptyness where the stigma should be and odd colors on the petals.

If it were my rose, I'd relax and enjoy it.
