Big seed pod

I was recently in Cape Coral ,FL and on SE 47th Ter. in front of Merrick's Sea Food the street trees had large green pods or buds( 4"x 3") on them They were up where I couldn't get a good look so I combed the ground for an example. The trees were medium sized trees maybe 30 feet tall with slightly smaller spread. The leaves were small, dull green, and similar in size and shape to live oak although a little shorter in length. I found a seed pod that had fallen and was drying out. It is almost 3" long and 1/3/4" wide. It was dull brown and had started to open on the stem end. Inside were scale like seeds clusterd to the center stem the color and look much like a ripe milk weed pod that has started to open but no fluff.

The shell as it dried out continued to open it's 5 thick (3/16")petals like a hickory husk.

What tree did I see?

I have a photo but not sure how to post it.
