Fast Growing Privacy Trees

I'm looking for a good choice for a year round privacy boarder tree. I have been looking for a fast growing conifer. The lot is over 4 acres. Growing too tall isn't a concern. I just want full coverage from the ground to at least 25' or so, year round.

A big plus would be something I could start from seed since I will need a lot of them and spending thousands on trees isn't what I am looking for.

there is a conifer forum.. where there have recently been many post on growing seeds .. as well as sight-line/windbreak posts ... come check it out ...

though starting seed would be a fun experiment.. can i suggest you buy some bulk 2 year old seedlings.. and get those growing.. while you find out if starting your own seedlings is a viable option ...

also contact your county soil conservation or extension office.. and find out if they have a spring seedling sale... and if you still might get involved with that ...

Surely the most common question on this particular forum.

A search will reveal dozens of threads on whatever species you choose (should do more than one), with much discussion on attributes and issues.

My guess would be Thuja occidentalis 'Elegantissima'. The gold tips are kind of its trademark. They are a much better selection than most of the Thuja. They stay fairly compact and full with good winter coloration. If you plant 3-4 footers now they will be 10-12 foot in 10 years, or more given your location. You can place them 6 feet apart and they will fill together in about 5-6 years. Good choice as long as you do not have an abundance of deer. They like to eat them. Bill

Your probably bang on with the cedars however they will take a long time to fill in an area. They don't require a lot of work compared to a vine generally speaking. I certainly don't recommend vines to fill your need because the privacy they give would generally be subject to the season. Below are some comments on the ones I have experience with. Most of the summer one of my chain link fences gets covered in Clematis Tangutica. I think it was called Clematis Bill MacKenzie. Its an amazing mess of yellow flowers. The nice thing with Bill MacKenzie was how fast it fills in during the spring over my other vines. I do have other clematis but nothing as bushy and filling as Bill MacKenzie. You could also look at Virginia Creeper but be careful as it can get out of control very fast. The neighbor behind our house has his crawling over his back fence snaking through the back lane and strangling parts of my garden. If you don't mind planting annuals every year you could try morning glories depending on the size / height of the area you want to cover. I've had good experience with morning glories all over my limited space. I'd seriously consider a long term investment though like cedars or some other type of bush. Evergreens for your area will give you all season privacy. Or if winter privacy isn't a big deal consider an edible bush like saskatoons. Well my 2 cents.

I don't prefer the Syzygium due to fruit drop produces many unwanted seedlings each year and the psyllid always seems to infest them. Also, you say that you want drought tolerant trees, but you also say that you water every 2 days. Not many natives can take lawn watering like that. A good choice might be to move the lawn sprinklers or remove the lawn completely. Most SoCal natives will not want the frequent lawn watering. If you can remove the lawn, you can then create a garden that is hydro-zoned with appropriate species that have similar water requirements as your trees. You won't need to water after the plants are established. Unless we have a really dry winter. I planted 40 ironwoods last October 4th, watered once a week for 6 weeks, then quit once the rain started. I have not watered since, and all are thriving. Consider Catalina Ironwood as a screen tree. They usually get to about 30 feet in a cultivated setting. This may be too tall for you. If so, choose something else instead of topping the trees if they get too tall. If you decide to make a native garden and use the ironwoods, you can complete the project with other plants that originate from the channel islands.

Do you want all one species? A disease that targets that species could wipe out your screen. I'm not familiar with your climate; if I were doing something like this elsewhere, for example, while I might use a lot of green giant arborvitae, I might also use a few Colorado blue spruce, a few golden hinoki, that sort of thing. Diversify my species and also get some blues and yellows in there. Your main 'back bone' tree need be cheap, but a few pricier options here and there can help.
