Abe Darby training

My Abe Darby is about 18x18" now, growing quite briskly, and about to flower. I have it next to a chain link fence and want to keep it sort of against, up, and over the fence. I'd like it to ramble/climb at the fence and not come out terribly far away from/in front of the fence.

I haven't done any training, but I suppose I need to start thinking about it. At what point do I start bending the canes back toward the fence? I'm not sure they are long enough to reach yet -- do I want to bend a couple as soon as they can reach with enough length to tie them to the chain link?

The only two climbers I previously grew wanted to climb: Buff Beauty and Cl. Royal Sunset. I know Abe is a bit more ambivalent.
