"At this time the quarantined area includes all of Monroe, Wayne, Macomb, St.Clair, Lenawee, Wasthenaw, Oakland, Lapeer, Hillsdale, Jackson, Livingston, Genesee, Ingham, Shiawasee, Saginaw, Branch, Calhoun, Eaton, Clinton and Gratiot counties. Research tests have shown that we can protect healthy trees from emerald ash borer with insecticides, but we may not be able to save severely compromised trees. By the time you see dead branches, thinning of the canopy, and woodpecker activity, the tree is already severely damaged, and it may be too late to save it with insecticides."

Well I haven't found that kind of map.
Al I have found are color coded maps shading in quarantine areas and so on but there aren't even any photographs of the devastation.

Does anyone in these states of michigan or ohio know of where the have cut down the dead trees? I was under the impression that you could really see the devastation.

Well, speaking as someone who lives in the very epicenter of the Emerald Ash Borer infestation zone, it is easy to see massive evidence of the tree death caused by this insect. I'm sure it's a lot harder, though, finding pictures of it on the internet. If this were summer, I'd volunteer to go out with my camera and snap some digit photos, but this time of year, not much to see, just bare trees, many with peeling bark and breaking limbs, depending upon how many years they've stood dead. Another sign is prolific suckering from the base.

I lost five large ash trees in my side yard. I tried treating them with Acecaps (concentrated orthene capsules put into a hole drilled in the trunk), but this didn't work. The insecticide imadicloprid (Bayer Advanced Systemic) works wonders on EAB, but alas, it didn't come onto the market in time to save my five trees. I did manage to save a tree at my sister's house that was somewhat younger and more vigorous than mine. It was showing SOME damage when I first started to apply the Bayer Advanced, but it has since recovered nicely and looks very healthy.

Some particular areas that come to mind are -- Summit Drive, Elizabeth Lake Road, and Telegraph Road along/near the old Summit Place Mall in Waterford, Michigan -- many ash trees planted years ago when the mall was thriving, now, with most of the stores closed, very little maintenance is done by the management, and they have allowed their dead and dying ash trees to pretty much remain in place (at least, last time I was through there and paid much attention).

And yes, to answer you question, the EAB did kill millions of ash trees. Of course, how bad it looks varies. Homeowners and businesses have, for the most part, cleaned up the dead trees. In woodlands, road right of ways, etc., you can still see many dead trees, but ash, although one of the main species in this part of Michigan, still wasn't anything like a monoculture, so the woods are filled with many other tree species, oaks, maples, beech, wild black cherry, etc., which are still alive and green.

when i was a kid ... we went hiking to wixom MI ... a CCC planted pine grove.. but after you crossed the river huron ...

there was a big sign .. explaining your move into a fully mature hardwood forest.. explaining that such areas have a mixture of maples, oaks, ash, beech [god i hated the people who scarred the beech bark] ....

i doubt you will find what you are looking for.. because a majority of the locations these trees are found in.. would be what i think they called.. climax forests ... with the mix of trees .. you just arent going to see blank swaths of devastation on satellite photos ...

but then ..... as dennis notes ..... you get into suburbia.. where some subdivision planner had some bright idea to go monoculture.. well ... all of a sudden these highly shaded subs are in full sun ...

and i would rather go out in the yard.. rather than spend hours looking online at suburbia .... lol

Yeah, I was thinking of a wooded natural area where ash was the predominant species. OF course I'm in the atlanta area and this place is majorly backwoods rural compared to the development in other major cities like Detroit. The urban forests here are... literally forests.

But it is still interesting to see the damage done in developed suburban areas and thanks for telling me where I could see it.
I was able to virtually cruise down some of those areas and I saw those dead trees in the parking lot at the Sears.And just down the street there is a Don Pablo's which we all know closed down a long time ago. Lots of dead trees in their landscape. And I did see a number of dead trees along the road that were planted. One looked like it came back from basal sprouts but then died. Is that common? You mentioned suckering.

By the way, I wasn't trying to suggest that devastation hadn't occured, I just wanted to see what it looked like. There's so much about it online- even PSA radio commercials but not a single photo of effected trees. That's odd. Showing the devastation in photos is a great way to demonstrate the problem and educate the public.

I think it is the garden guy in the Detroit Homestyle part of the Detroit Free Press last year, that said they were going to loose at least half the green trees, with death of the Green Ash plantings in Detroit and suburb areas. This is a huge part of the "Canopy" of trees in the Metro area, that is going to end up costing in higher temps over summer. These trees need replacing, to do what trees do, cool the air with transpiration, shade the soil. He showed maps of the area, what tree cover they had a while ago, and how bad it was then. Real visible difference in the amount of Canopy on those maps,in the 10 year span. Canopy showed with the Thermography? images taken. Shows surface temps, colored for hot and cold ground surfaces in the photos.

I seem to remember that the Emerald Ash Borer, does not kill ALL variety of Ash trees, but it is sure spreading fast. Most of southern Michigan is looking at dying trees, with spread into nearby states. Few folks pay attention to destruction of the infested wood by burning as needed. They give it to their friends or someone volunteers to come clean up, hauls the buggy wood home two counties away because it was FREE WOOD. Spreads the bug along the way.

I am in Mid-Michigan, just north of Lansing, and we are seeing quite a bit of dying ash trees. As mentioned, many are private trees, not street or road trees that are more visible. Seeing a number of articles in the newspaper about folks having to deal with their dead trees.

Mountain Ash does not seem to be bothered, yet. I don't see Green Ash in our wooded areas. More of a planted tree around here.

First of all, re: some ash being affected while others not......it has become evident that all ash species native to N. U.S. are vulnerable, with white ash showing a bit more resistance but it too eventually succumbing. And mountain ash, a member of the rose family, has nothing whatever to do with this discussion. It is not an ash.

Green ash is so common, it's hard for me to believe the previous posters comments that it is rare in the wild there. Just across the pond over here in Wisconsin, where, btw, EAB has become established, there are just thousands upon thousands of green ash in wooded areas. It is a VERY common tree.

Keep in mind too, that one of the main results of this insects damage is that there IS nothing to see....the dead trees being removed following the attacks.

Here in WI, the quarantine area is still quite small, but was expanded significantly following comprehensive examination of the area surrounding the initial discovery. At every point where they looked, foresters and entomologists found evidence of the insects presence. The sad truth is that being placed in a quarantine area will actually help forestry crews in dealing with the huge amount of timber which will have to be downed. One of the lessons learned in Illinois is that if the quarantine area is made too small, there can be a problem with there being nowhere to take this downed material. So in that sense, life is easier when the quarantine expands.

denninmi, I think I've been down some of those streets while visiting your side of the state. In some areas it is very obvious that there have been massive tree die offs. As we travel along the main highways to visit relatives in Ohio and Pennsylvania it is obvious when we reach areas where EAB is rampant.

One, if not the first, outbreak in the west side of the state is thought to have started at a shopping center a few miles from our home. From what I've heard, ash trees for landscaping were brought in from a SE Michigan nursery which was not supposed to be shipping any ash trees at the time. And, not surprisingly, they were infected with the borers. The city responded by cutting all ash trees within a certain distance...maybe a mile out, I can't remember the exact distance, but it was a large area. For weeks crews were cutting and chipping trees from yards and parks. And yet it did not look like a clear cut because there are alot of other species in the area. It did not surprise me when other infestations were found soon afterwards in other parts of the city. It seems like cutting and quarantine come too late to stop this critter. Like denninmi mentioned, there are some homeowner control methods that are looking very promising. A business park and a college campus outside the quarantine area took preventive action before any other EAB sites were found. They had key landscape trees identified and began have them treated regularly. Both places still have healthy ashes while most other places have lost some key specimens.

Around here there is a group working hard to get up to date info out to homeowners. I got a strange look when I told my husband I was going to be attending a "Save Your Ash" workshop put on by a local environmental group. University researchers told of their latest findings, arborist told of their treatment methods, and city foresters told of options available to homeowners.

A final part covered cultural impacts, something I hadn't considered. A Native American who is a renowned basket maker shared how his heritage is threatened by the possible extinction of black ash trees. His family's traditional harvesting swampland is unaffected as yet, but he was extremely concerned about the very likely loss of an age old cultural tradition. Black ash logs can be beaten, and the wood will separate between the growth rings. It is then cut into the weaving strips needed for baskets. No other wood works as well. He had the best business card I've ever seen. A clear label with his business info was applied to a paper thin piece of his basket making black ash splint and cut to card size. I hope his children can have the some card materials 30 years from now, but I'm fearful that will not be possible.

You know I'd bet we have a larger population of ashes here in the southeast than in the midwest. We don't have black ash but we have loads of pop ash that should make up for it.
We have green, white and blue ashes yet ashes are unheard of in the retail nursery and landscape trade here. Once in a blue moon, you find a couple but it's nothing like in the midwest. Nursery workers here don't even know what an Ash tree is or looks like.

I don't even know if anyone is paying any attention to our native ash habitats to see if they are healthy. Obviously these bugs kill very fast. When people see dead trees in the woods nowadays I think we all just assume it's from our drought.

last weekend.. someone suggested.. that they ID'ing impervious groves of ash.. and starting to study why certain populations are resistant..

anyone have info on that??
