Celebration of Old Roses, May 16

One of the oldest and loveliest heritage rose events will be held in El Cerrito, CA, on May 16, in the El Cerrito Community Center, from 11 to 4.

Started by Miriam Wilkins, founder of the Heritage Roses Group, this event showcases old roses by the hundreds, brought in from people's homes, the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden, Vintage Gardens, and elsewhere. The scent when you walk into the hall is amazing, and it's a chance to study many roses that you've only read about. Rose lovers gather and converse. Roses, rose books, and rose merchandise are for sale. You can bring in unidentified roses for identification. A fine time is had by all.

Miriam passed away late last year, but a devoted group of rose lovers is keeping this event going. We've had such a lovely spring that the roses should be phenomenal this year.

Jeri and I will be there, along with others from this forum.

There will be opportunities to help pick the flowers on Saturday, May 15. I will be posting details about that when I get them.

At a table for Local Affiliate Heritage Groups, we'll have a Silent Auction, and handouts with information about finding (or forming) a local group in your area.

And we'll be waiting there to talk about roses, and to say "Hey," so I hope many of you will join us.

As "Rosie" days go, this is one of the best EVER.

I wish I could go! But out-of-town company will be visiting us and they wouldn't be willing to drive another 200 miles to go see roses.

I drove the 200 miles from my home to El Cerrito in March to buy roses from Miriam Wilkins garden. I bought 4 of them and feel privileged to have them. I am so glad the event will continue because I'm keeping that weekend open on my calender next year! Maybe by then my roses from Miriam will be established here and producing enough blooms for me to bring along!

I ended up with the Kathrinerl (thanks to Jeri's great salesmanship -- or, rather, I should say, "matchmaking"!), for which I am glad -- I've got a spot I think it will like (p.m. shade) and where its color should shine. I grew the one parent, Bonica, in Massachusetts, where it was a great rose, and have always been interested in the other parent, Gruss an Teplitz, but hadn't gotten there yet, so this variety will be interesting. As usual, a very enjoyable event. For one (among many!), I was blown away by the spray of 'Bobbie James' on display -- it was practically ethereal, a virtual flight of white butterflies. So many blooms we would otherwise never see...and so many rose lovers all in one place.

Busy times, these. Our garden is in full bloom, headed to fuller bloom. Vintage Gardens' Open Gardens start today. The Celebration is next weekend....such rosy surfeit.

I'll have to temporarily abandon my month-long assault on the annuals grasses that are 6Â½ feet tall this year.

Carol - hope to get a chance to say hi!

Looking forward to seeing folks. The Celebration is in some ways a better event for me than the cemetery's open garden, because I don't have much responsibility and have more time to mingle!
