What to plant: Magnolia or Ginkgo?

I am considering planting a tree in a morning sun spot, usually sun from 8 or 9am until 2 or 3 pm. I need a bright specimen tree that will stand out against a dark background of oak trees. Deciduous is better so more light reaches that shade in winter. I'd prefer a tree not too thirsty.

Can anyone offer an opinion as to a magnolia (m x soulangiana seems to do well in these parts) vs. a Ginkgo? The ginkgo might get too big, unless it can be kept small.
