Joining 2 HF Greenhouses

Hi All,

Just bought my second HF. Now I'm looking for ways to join it with my existing one. I've seen a couple of post with pictures from an overall view, but I would like to see close-ups of the actual joining sections (from the floor to the roof, inside and out).

Hi Brian;

Sorry I didn't get a chance to answer your email earlier. Unfortunately I didn't take any pics of the joining or construction as I was assembling late in the year and didn't have time to take any under construction.

I guess the best way to explain it is that I omitted the back wall of the new greenhouse and dilled new holes in the door wall of the old grenhouse and simply matched the pieces. That's about as clear as mud I know, but it's what i did.

Sorry I couldn't explain it better. It's really an intuitive process. look over the pieces of the new house and match them to the old. I think Vamptoo(cindy) did this differently though so you might want to do a search on her username and see what you come up with.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the reply. I was thinking that a couple of shots of the finished product may help me out a bit. I'm at that stage where you don't know exactly where to start (you know, the hardest part is actually starting).
Well, at least I got the wood for the frame and dug the hole (now it's a big mud hole to get into the existing GH). I dig down a little for extra head room.

Hi poaky1, I definately, absolutely needed extra clips for my HF 10x12 greenhouse, as well as screws through the panels into the frame. I can positively state that my greenhouse would not be standing today if I had not taken these steps. I did not caulk my panels in place, because I like to be able to remove them if needed. So, my solution was extra clips and screws, but Saturn3600 (above) used both extra clips and caulk, on his or her 6x8 greenhouse. There used to be more frequent threads around here, years ago, about Harbor Freight disasters, back before people knew to take a few extra steps to make the panels and foundation more secure. Here's one, for example. Greenhouse Disaster HFGH 10x12 You're the only one who can decide if it's worth the extra $9.99 plus shipping, for a package of 72 clips. To me, a little extra insurance seems like a no-brainer. Even if I lived in a climate that did not have uniformly high winds, I would not want to risk the loss of my greenhouse, or plants, but that's just me. An unusual gust of wind or errant windstorm can happen anywhere, even if it's not the norm. You can order extra clips by calling the 1-800 number on your Harbor Freight manual. For the 6x8 greenhouse, Harbor Freight uses the part number 46 for the panel clips. The SKU number is SKU number 27339, for a set of 72 clips, $9.99. Hope this helps, I know some of these decisions can be confusing. I sleep better if I err on the side of stability and safety (I really hate surprises.) I think they usually ship the clips pretty quickly.

Well that's a bummer. Here's a secret that sometimes works, and sometimes doesn't. When you want DH to do something, and he's not getting with it, go out and start doing it yourself. If he's like a lot of guys, he'll want to get involved and/or take over as soon as you get started, to make sure you're "doing it right"! ;-) If that doesn't work, just do like I did, and do it yourself. I did ask for (and received) DH's help in screwing panels onto the frame and repairing the damage, but I did all the insulating myself. Granted, it's not pretty, or professional, and it probably could be tighter, but it does the job, and I didn't have to wait for him. I used bungee cords and packing tape to put my bubble wrap up (clear, so light could still come through), and foam board insulation for the bottom 2ft. of the walls, and 4ft. of the north wall (it's just leaned up against the polycarb panels, and I had it cut at the hardware store). I used the foam in a can to seal off gaps in the frame - yes, even the ones at the roof line and corner seams. Not pretty, but it worked and was easier than calking the whole thing. Anyways, good luck for next year...at least most of your plants are still alive, which means with a little work, they'll probably spring back nicely. Plants are resiliant that way... :-)

For my first gh, I dug an 18" deep pit, then built two long beds I filled back up to ground level. I used heavy boards in the center and left the pathway at 18" down. Stuff near the ceiling was too hard to reach, so I didn't repeat that in the other versions I built later. The current one has an 8' ceiling and raised beds. -Ed

Model 69893 is the newer version of the Harbor Freight 10x12 kit. Model 93358 is the older version of the Harbor Freight 10x12 kit (I have this one.) There have been some small changes to some of the parts (doors, floor plates, ceiling plates) and the shape of some of the back panels have changed. I'm not really sure what spurred these changes, and I honestly don't know why one would be any better than the other. That said, I guess I'd probably choose the newer model, only because it seems logical that HF might discontinue replacement parts for the older kit, before they discontinue parts for the newer version. The manuals are a bit different for the two versions. If you get your kit and some of the parts don't seem to match what's shown in the manual, you can download the correct one from the HF website. (I've had a few emails from folks with confusion resulting from having the wrong manual.)

Good for the extra height....I'm avg, 6' tall and I'm glad I built the foundation higher. that extra 12" comes in handy when you have a basket you want to hang. What are you using your's for Brian?..strictly seeds or as a general greenhouse for year round use?

I'm growing mostly orchids in mine.

Hi Dave,
Got the two GHs joined together yesterday. You were right, once you start it kinda joins itself. Just eliminated the rear of the new one, drilled a couple of hole and suddenly, 16' greenhouse.
Still working on weatherproofing. The worst thing about a HF is the door. I've got it sliding pretty well, but I really don't like it. The least bump seems to set it off track. Same problem with the original too. Also it lets a lot of air in. Did you improve yours any?
To answer your question, I use mine for seeds (flowers and vegetable starting). I'll be getting ready to start very soon now on a few things. Be interesting heating twice the space.

Brian - Congratulations on joining the two greenhouses! Ah, if only I had room for one more ...

I have the same problem with the door not sliding smoothly and always jumping the track. Someone suggested using silicone grease, which I haven't done yet.

I found a few strips of heavy plastic (in my case, left over solar pool cover) hung in front of the door helped cut down on the draftiness considerably. It's explained in a thread I started, "Remedy for a Drafty Door", in this forum ... it's just a little further down the page.

Hi Brian;

As I wrote in Diane's thread try some grease on those tracks...all parts of the track...that fixed mine up well. The door isn't really a problem for me as my door faces east and our winds come primarily from the West/NorthWest. Watch the heat from solar gain in there though...it goes up fast!
