I got a "red sport" on my monster CB too. I hope it is not the same (my husband dug it out last weekend in disgust).

Luanne, Are the flowers exactly like those of CB except for color? What about the leaves? My immediate suspicion is that, like Masha, you're seeing a rootstock sprout of 'Dr. Huey' growing up among the real CB. And if that's the case, the thing to do is follow that cane down to the base, where it emerges from the understock, and cut it off. On the other hand, if it arises from higher up, and really is a red form of Cecile Brunner, you may have something quite novel and worth propagating.

Malcom, the shoots come out of the same branch, the buds and bloom size are identicle as are the leaves. I will get pictures Friday to make sure my memory is clear. They are also not the same red as Dr. H but are more a raspberry color.

The bloom form doesn't look like 'Cecile Brunner' to me, so I think you need to verify, without any doubt, that this red branch is connected to an older part of the plant that is producing normal pink blooms. There are other understocks out there beside 'Dr. Huey', so you need to eliminate that as a possibility.

Luanne, there was a Red Cecile Brunner (and a climbing form). But they were a seedling, and a sport from it. Or they were supposedly that.

Krebs developed some red-like Cecile Brunner combinations in the forties, including Pasadena Tournament, Red Sweetheart and Lady Ann Kidwell, but they all involved cross breeding, usually with an unknown or unnamed seedling. A genuine red sport of CB would be wonderful. I hope that this is the case. After that, the trick would be to recapture the Yellow Cecile Brunners of Howard and Smith or those from Ralph Moore in the late twenties.

Good luck with it. It just goes to show there is life in the old girl yet.

That would be terrific! Being a polyantha, it should propagate readily from cuttings. I'd talk to Gregg about how to do the cuttings if there's any doubt.

And of course, like Trospero and Malcolm says, you do want to make absolutely sure that's a branch off of a branch that's definitely Cecile. Sounds like you've already made sure of that, though.

It would be really cool but I guess it will have to be checked out carefully. I got excited about a sport on one of my MACs the other day until I realized it was a stray branch of Vanguard running through MAC.

Pam, that's so funny. Earlier in the year I saw a pure white bloom coming from my Felicia. I got excited and was planning on taking a picture, but, of course forgot about it, because that's just part of life today. Then I went back to check it and realized that when I pruned last winter, I left a branch from Prosperity cross over.

I had thought Dr. Huey had larger flowers but I noticed after carefully tracing the cane to ground it came right out of the dirt to the left of the plant. The leaves were more serrated, the petals rounder and in the middle finally a bosss of beautiful yellow stamens.

A true red "Sweetheart" rose sport would have been wonderful! I love sport-fishing too! But have not caught anything important yet! Just like my amateur-hybridazation - the hips with unknow pollen parents seems to give more interesting roses!

It's not all that exciting, but my Variagota di Bologna actually is sporting back to red. So I told Kaylah to name it and she did.
