I can't keep an Amber Waves overwinter.
Firefly actually couldn't take my summer heat, nor could Snow Angel, or (Tiarella) Sunspot.

The Creme Brule, Melba, and Creme Carmel and going gangbusters. So is the very interesting Mardi Gras.

Black Beauty, which I loved, I bought 3 years ago. I divided it in the fall. Probably badly, since I didn't really know what it was doing. Those divisions, Cinnamon Bear, and a Crimson Curls, put up a single leaf last summer. This year, they're doing gangbusters, too.

So give yourself one more year to see what those struggling do. I was surprised this year that they're so happy. I was already considering replacements. I seem to be centering on a certain type...

I have Heuchera "Raspberry Ice" & "Lime Rickey" and Heucherella "Burnished Bronze" & "Sunspot." All came through the winter fine. "Burnished Bronze" is doing better than ever. I moved "Sunspot" this Spring, so I can't compare it to how it did last year.

My new Caramels and Peach Flambes came back just fine and are looking good. Lime Rickey which is a year older also came back very well. However, my 3 new Key Lime Pies survived, but are very small, not even close to what I expected. I had heard that this one was hardier than Lime Rickey.

My single surviving Peach Melba from a couple years back looks like it should be in a seed plug it is so small, but my only surviving Amber Waves (weak plants) is large and healthy looking for the first time ever. Go figure!

All three of my varieties of Heucherella (Dayglow Pink, Strike it Rich, & Burnished Bronze) took a hit. Burnished Bronze which was planted in 2004 came up about half its usual size, but looks healthy. I lost one Strike it Rich completely and the other two of it and 3 of DP are so small they should be in the seed plug with Peach Melba.

My one and only Palace Purple, which I have had forever, just now put up two tiny leaves. I thought it finally gave up the ghost. Maybe it came up early and got hit by the Easter freeze. None of the rest were showing yet here when it was cold, but maybe they were too close to the surface. Didn't have any obvious heaving this year.

Oh, and I also lost one plant of Strawberry Candy, a green leaved one that I grow for the flowers. Good old Green Spice (lousy flowers but pretty plant) looks happy as ever.

I had big losses. In the compost pile are: heucheras snow angel (this is my second failure with this one), key lime pie, frosted violet, peach melba, peachy keen, tiarella kimono, heucherella burnished bronze. Ailing but still alive (barely) are: heuchera amber waves, sparkling burgundy, velvet night, heucherella day glow pink. Doing great: heucheras amethyst mist, palace passion (this is not purple palace), dale's strain, smokey rose, green spice, mardi gras, regina, heucherella chocalate lace, tiarella neon lights. I am seriously thinking of giving up on this group of plants and concentrating on hardy geraniums!

I lost a Snow Angel a few years back but all of mine make it through the winter. There have been times in the past that they get smaller or don't preform as well as years past, but in that case I move them to either more or less sun. This seems to work well. I just moved one that was small to the other side of the yard were there was more sun and in just a months time it is larger than last year.
Go figure. Try moving them. And more protection in the winter.

Also one note is plant them in the spring so they get a good head start. Moving and planting in the fall seems to stress them out. They seem to need to get established early. Just an opinion and observation.

I only have Creme Brulee and Regina and both are doing fine. Regina heaved a lot but is satching up now. Creme Brulee is big and full.

I lost my Marmalade. Some had a really rough time coming up this spring.

I lost my Kimono but it had made it through the winter. It was our late hard freeze in April that got it. Stoplight made it, but I mailed it off to another state with cooler summers. It just hasn't done well for me. It kept getting smaller. I lost Strawberry Candy, Ebony & Ivory and Jade Gloss.
Still have Plum Pudding, Green Spice, Persian Carpet, Silver Scrolls, Fireworks, Dale's Strain, Palace Purple and a couple of greenish unknowns.

From what Ive seen many of the vergated white/Green and yellow or orange ones are hard to get started. The red seem to do better. My peach Flambe and Marmalade are half the size of my Amethyst Mist and Obsidian. I have 10 or 15 varieties, Ill have to look at them again to see what others are doing ok.

I forgot about how great Marmalade is. My Burnished Bronze has taken complete, full, evil, hot sun for 2 years now and is flourishing. I plan to divide it this fall and put it in as border plants, it's so gorgeous. It also retains its color, unlike icky Palace Purple.

I dug out 6 Palace Purples and gave them to unsuspecting gardeners this year at the MidAtlantic Gardening Board swap. Hate that thing.

My old ones, Frosted Violet, Chocolate Veil, Splendens, San Guinea, Mt. St. Helen's, Can Can, Silver Scrolls, are gorgeous still and doing strong.

I'm still out on Harmonic Convergence, Saturn's Rings, and Color of Beauty. They're making it just fine, but not terribly interesting.

None. But that's because I stopped buying the variegated ones. I stopped buying Heucherellas too. Although Dayglow Pink and Birthday Cake are doing well.

New last year were Champagne Bubbles, Hollywood and Peach Flambé. Peach Flambé is awesome!

Amber Waves is still struggling after four years but is finally more that a half dozen leaves.

Cherries Jubilee, Silver Scrolls and ... aren't doing very well this year. I have no idea why. They've grown well for at least three years.

The ones that have never skipped a beat have been Ebony and Ivory, Vesuvius, Checkers, Lime Ricky, Velvet Night, Obsidian and Swirling Fantasy.

I added the following last year and all are doing well:
Peach Flambe ( a favorite)
Raspberry ice
Hollywood
Obsidian
Midnight Rose
Plum Pudding
Sparkling Burgandy

I planted Lime Ricky in 2005 and it is doing well although it is a little smaller than the others. I had Marmalade a few years back and it never did much. Also for me Green Spice hasn't lasted very long - but it may be where it is sited.

I've had Amethyst Mist since 2004. Also, had Jade Gloss since 2003 - I did loose one of the three when I tried moving them near the end of the summer last year. I lost a couple of others that I tried to move at the same time as well. Hostared said the same thing above.

Last year I remember someone making an observation that the Terra Nova heucheras are more hardy than the Proven Winners ones. Don't know if there is any truth to that.
