Anyone growing Happy Child?
Comments (5)I grew it for 3 years (own root from Heirloom) because I wanted a compact rose for a container. I liked the flower form, the fragrance (marvelous to my nose), the color (bright yellow)and the above average disease resistance. It's repeat was average, and its stems were short and a tad on the weak side. However in the 3rd year a friend of mine commented that hers had a few Octopus arms growing, and then a few weeks later mine did too. I didn't wait around to see what would happen next. I gave mine away. In your cooler zone with a shorter growing period you may never have this problem....See MoreWhat is the verdict on Happy Child?
Comments (11)New Dawn will be OK own root. So long as the climate is warm enough to grow it at all. I can grow it, and people around me can grow it. They can't grow it ten miles north, and Jim can't grow it. However, it should be hardier than Viking Queen. John Cabot as an own root grows very, v e r y s l o w l y. It took about ten years to get a big flush from it, and a few more to get any repeat. I often wonder if one of the problems people have getting repeat from the big Explorers is that they take so long to really get going, and people lose patience. Yes, the issue is that I'm too cold for the normal Austins to do well. But I'm not the only one in this climate....See MoreHappy child and Valencia rose
Comments (4)I've had little success with happy child. It doesn't repeat flower as well as the other David austins and the blooms aren't what I expected. I was after the bright big blooms as in the product tag but the blooms are medium sized and more of a pale yellow and go an off White pale yellow as they age. It doesn't have a fragrance either. I had more luck with souvenir de Marcel Proust which is a delbard. No fragrance either but their blooms are a beautiful bright yellow and very elegant....See MoreWhich Yellow Austin: 'Happy Child' or 'Poet's Wife'?
Comments (28)I have The Poet's wife for its second year growing. My Austin's most of them it is 1 to 2 years before I really get the full benefit of them. last year it only had a few blooms. The first year the blooms were not as deep yellow as they are this year. It does get quite a bit of shade so I had considered moving it but it seems to be getting happier now. Starting to get a lot more blooms now and they are quite yellow. We just starting getting 90 degree heat and in July and August everything fades quickly if they bloom at all. I expect to have a couple months of nice color before the heat hits....See Moredublinbay z6 (KS)
